I had heard about these murders while watching a true crime show on TV. I had purchased the book last fall and read one chapter, then got busy and didn't pick it up until a week later. I started over and read it in one day, I couldn't put it down. It hit close to home because of the location. I live downstate, but spend many weekends in East Tawas, South Branch and ate at Timbers many times. My boyfriend and I spent the weekend in Tawas at their family house about a month after reading the book and I made it a point to have him take me up to Luzerne and we had lunch at what was formally known as Linker's Lost Creek Lodge. I can't describe how I felt. We drove slowly back down the road where Brian & David lost their lives and I felt the need to pay my respects. Although my boyfriend didn't read the book, I told him all about it and he couldn't believe the brutality of the story. He grew up near the area, his family has had a deer camp in South Branch since the early 50's. He said it wouldn't surprise him if the family has run into the Duvall's at one place or another. J.R. & Donald got away with murder longer than they should have but thank God there are persistent people out there like Bronco who just don't give up and also Donna Pendergast who didn't back down. Definitely a must read.
AMAZING book - will give you the chills March 27, 2008
I have been going to Mio since I was 0, my parents bought 10 acres in 1980. My Mother ALWAYS talked about this while I was growing up. Unfortunately, she got alzheimers in 2001 and wasnt able to understand that the people responsible for the murders were caught.. Anyways, it is common knowledge "up north" about the locals. There are a lot of them that do NOT like "flatlanders", hunters, etc. I do not trust any of them. NEVER tell any of them where you live or have your cabin. You've heard now about the lowlifes robbing cabins, etc.. up in Mio. Not just in mio, but there are some *interesting* types up there. Im not saying everybody up north is like that, but trust me there are plenty of them and they hate downstaters. When I was 7 or 8 years old (1987-1988) I remember my parents talking to locals about the missing hunters- it was well known that they were murdered and fed to pigs. Its a shame it took so long to bring this to the public and the Duvalls thrown in prison.
Now that I got this off my chest..
The book was absolutely awesome!! I couldnt put it down. It was kinda choppy at times, running on, but never losing my interest. Highly highly recommended. Gave me goosebumps non stop.
More Frightening Than Fiction March 26, 2008
I remember reading about these murders in the Detroit Newspapers and couldn't understand why they were never solved. We've always loved driving through that area of Michigan and my spouse loved to go deer hunting near Luzerne. We ended up living in that area in a very nice house not far from Mio and Curtisville when my spouse took a job transfer with the public utility company. It was pretty obvious by the sneers and glares of the locals that we weren't accepted because not only did we wash our sweatsuits, but we didn't go to the bars. We only ate at Timbers Steakhouse once, quickly gobbling our cheeseburgers down while who we now know to be Coco Duvall turned his bar stool around and glared at us while JR tended bar. Dolly Duvall was waitressing and made loud, snotty remarks to the Duvall brothers and the other three customers because "we didn't want to be seated in a smoking section and we wanted Diet Coke, not the beer on special with the burgers; they must've defecated their pants", only she didn't word it quite that way. After quickly leaving we swore we'd never go back. I still get goosebumps when I realize we had looked into the face of random evil. This book is written as a true mystery; and it is, even the last chapter about the murders revealed clues. Tom Henderson is a wonderful Author and helped to explain exactly why it took so long for the Duvall brothers to come to trial.

These murders took place in our otherwise calm, peaceful part of Michigan, so this story really hits home. We'll never again go through the little towns or past the businesses without having our hair bristle on the back of our necks. Sad that the killers were able to live life as usual for 15-17 years before being brought to justice! Accessories to the crime are still free because of the Statute of Limitations. This book won't bore you!

I was born in Michigan but moved in Dec. 1984. I never heard about this case, so when I picked the book up and read the blurb, I bought it.
Not disappointed that I did. Henderson is not a perfect writer, and there are alot of spelling and other errors in the book. I agree with another reviewer about the chapters being a bit short. But, the story itself is a grabber and seemed well researched. It kept me awake many nights. All the guys wanted to do was take a weekend off, get away from it all and have some guy time.
You feel total revulsion for the Duvall gang. The area where the crime happened is beautiful. The crime, horrifying. The book, a page turner.
Highly recommend it for any true crime buff like myself!
