Product Description

Detroit mortgage broker Mark Unger adored his wife Florence and their two young sons. But after a decade of marriage and increasing financial trouble, Mark’s life began to slowly unravel. He became addicted to pain killers and gambling, and ended up spending five months in rehab.

Forced to go back to work, Flo became bitter and resentful of Mark and began to have an affair with one of his friends. When Mark returned home and his disability checks weren’t enough to make ends meet Flo filed for divorce.

Panicked by the thought losing her, Mark did everything he could to win Flo back. Even though she resisted his efforts, Flo did agree to a weekend getaway at the family’s favorite lakeside resort. But after their first night there, Flo went missing…and the next day her corpse was found floating in the water. Mark claimed that her death was an accident—one that must have happened while he was up at the cottage, putting the kids to sleep. But soon a jury would be convinced of what Flo’s friends and family believed to be true: That Flo would never have been alone on the boat dock that night because she was deathly AFRAID OF THE DARK.

1 out of 5 stars Afraid of staying on point   August 19, 2010
Newman (Seattle)
Again, this is a fascinating story which the author manages to turn into an endless description of unimportant details. (Please see my other review of this author. That book was so forgettable that I can't even remember the title.) Why he spent so much time on the courtroom repartee of the attorneys and the medical examiners is a mystery to me. I was well past the half way point when I simply gave up...I actually felt that my time could be better spent elsewhere. If he had explored Mark Unger's motivation and what actually had happened to his unlucky wife, I will never know, because I just couldn't take any more.

This author is a talented writer. He has the ability to engage his reader. I liked the short chapters, the overall pace of the book. But I would humbly recommend that he engage a better editor.

4 out of 5 stars Great read!   June 15, 2010

I liked the book a lot. I have read many true crimes and this was one of my favorites. Did he or didn't he? It is like Fatal Vision in that regard. I enjoyed the background, the details and some of the repetitive sequences.. .
I would highly recommend this book to other true crime aficionados!!

3 out of 5 stars Nice Writing Style, But Information Overload   April 6, 2010

Mark and Florence (Flo) Unger were teetering on the edge of divorce. The papers were filed. All that was left was a Final Decree.

Divorce would come in a more formal manner when Mark murdered Flo.

As a last effort to make the transition from nuclear to divorced family easier on their two boys, Flo agreed to accompany Mark and the children on a weekend getaway to the resort town of Watervale, Michigan.

It was during this holiday that Flo was discovered on Saturday morning, floating in the lake, after having suffered numerous injuries.

Was it a coincidental accident or murder?

Veteran true crime author Tom Henderson attempts to present both sides of the debate in his newest book Afraid of the Dark: The True Story of a Reckless Husband, his Stunning Wife, and the Murder that Shattered a Family (True Crime). However, with the incessant name dropping attached to a long, boring history of each, this book fell flat.

I think Henderson has a great writing style; nice flow, perfect transitioning. Yet the information overload is a heavy distraction. The book actually becomes difficult to read.

And considering the appeal issues that will most definitely surround this case, I personally would have preferred to read it once the appeals are nearing exhaustion.

There is indeed an interesting true crime story within the book. If you don't mind skimming or aren't turned off by the boring details, then you'll want to read Afraid of the Dark: The True Story of a Reckless Husband, his Stunning Wife, and the Murder that Shattered a Family (True Crime) by Tom Henderson.

3 out of 5 stars the crime is terrible but the details are boring...   February 20, 2010
Constance Bryceland (Albuquerque, NM United States)
sorry to say...this book is lots of technical details and weight and motion and medical facts...not that interesting to read, I'm afraid. It is terrible that a murder was committed but this book did not make me understand much about the couple. I felt like it is more about the details of the prosecution. Also shows some Michigan politics that are a little weird...prosecution would have gone to any length to make a case here, no matter what.
