Product Description

The acclaimed #1 New York Times bestselling author presents a spellbinding tale of a mother's tragic loss and one man's last chance at gaining salvation.

Can we save ourselves, or do we rely on others to do it? Is what we believe always the truth?

One moment June Nealon was happily looking forward to years full of laughter and adventure with her family, and the next, she was staring into a future that was as empty as her heart. Now her life is a waiting game. Waiting for time to heal her wounds, waiting for justice. In short, waiting for a miracle to happen.

For Shay Bourne, life holds no more surprises. The world has given him nothing, and he has nothing to offer the world. In a heartbeat, though, something happens that changes everything for him. Now, he has one last chance for salvation, and it lies with June's eleven-year-old daughter, Claire. But between Shay and Claire stretches an ocean of bitter regrets, past crimes, and the rage of a mother who has lost her child.

Would you give up your vengeance against someone you hate if it meant saving someone you love? Would you want your dreams to come true if it meant granting your enemy's dying wish?

Once again, Jodi Picoult mesmerizes and enthralls readers with this story of redemption, justice, and love.

1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment   May 1, 2008
I was very disappointed in this book. I had very high hopes for this book because I love this author. I only read half of this book and couldn't read another page. I
usually finish books that I start but this one I just couldn't finish. Maybe my one star was unfair since I didn't finish it but I just couln't read anymore. I really wanted to like this book but for me it just didn't work for me. I did love Ninteen Minutes, The Tenth Circle and The Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult so I still think she is an excellent author but for me this book was a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read   April 30, 2008
FANTASTIC book. Absolutely awesome. This book was great. Sometimes I wish we could find out about the characters after the book ends, but so wonderful. kept me engaged the whole way through. Was definitely worth it!!

3 out of 5 stars Not her best effort   April 28, 2008
While this book is miles ahead of her "Songs of the Humpback Whale" it is most definitely not up to par with her others. Especially upsetting was the almost identical resemblance to Stephen King's,"The Green Mile" down to the smallest details including Shay miraculously restoring life to a dead bird, whereas in the the Stephen King novel, it was a dead mouse. Most of the prison scenes and attendant "miraculous" occurences were so identical to The Green Mile that I was greatly disappointed that she had to "borrow" so heavily from someone else's plot line. I have never read another best-seller that was a direct expression of someone else's idea quite so completely. While Jodi always tackles an interesting social dilemma with great insight and passion, this book left many loose ends unexplored or completely dropped. She attempted to tie in too many themes, such as the Gnostic books of the Bible without success or relevancy. If she was not planning to fully explore this concept with the characters, she should not have opened the door to an incompletely researched theme. Just when you thought she was getting ready for a revelation, it fell flat and changed direction. Her non-development of the main characters (mom and daughter) did not particularly endear those characters to the reader, yet much character development was wasted on ancillary characters such as Maggie and Shay's cellmates. This book was a soup sandwich and overall, while worth a quick read, was a disappointment from an author we all know can do so much better. Looking forward to the next one. Hope she resumes the stellar style she adopted with My Sister's Keeper.
