Sensuality: 8

Jaine Bright and three close friends share dinner one night and during casual conversation, create a list of qualifications for the perfect man--some logical, some hilariously funny, some racy. Within days, their tongue-in-cheek wish list of attributes for Mr. Perfect has been leaked to the press and the resultant publicity is overwhelming. Coworkers, TV crews, and reporters barrage the quartet with comments and criticism.

As if Jaine doesn't have enough to cope with, she has a new neighbor who she suspects is a criminal. She's relieved to learn that her neighbor is really an undercover cop, but she's still wary--because smart, sexy Sam Donovan handles her sharp witticisms with easy humor, and Jaine suspects that he may threaten her heart. What Jaine doesn't know is that she's about to need Sam desperately for something other than romance because her circle of friends is in big trouble. Unfortunately, that list of qualifications for Mr. Perfect has touched off a madman's rage. All of their lives are threatened and some of them are going to die, maybe all of them, if Sam can't stop the unknown killer.

Mr. Perfect brings to readers the quintessential Linda Howard hero, whose straightforward, "me Tarzan, you Jane" attitude plays well with a smart, witty heroine. The rapid-fire dialogue between the two is downright hilarious at times, even when the two are about to steam up the windows and burn up the sheets. It's difficult to balance this kind of humor and sensuality with edgy suspense, but Howard manages it with aplomb. If you enjoyed Heart of Fire and Dream Man, you're going to love this latest novel. It's drop-dead wonderful.--Lois Faye Dyer

Book Description

What would make the perfect man? That's the delicious topic heating up the proceedings at a certain table of professional women at their favorite restaurant, Ernie's, tonight: Mr. Perfect. What qualities would he have? Would he be tall, dark, and handsome? Caring and warmhearted -- or will just muscular do? Jaine Bright and her three girlfriends start off with the basics -- he'd be faithful and reliable, the responsible type, with a great sense of humor.

But as the conversation picks up momentum, so do the quartet's requirements for Mr. Perfect -- and they write down a tongue-in-cheek checklist that's both funny and racy. The next thing they know, the List, as it has come to be called, spreads like wildfire throughout their company and sizzles along e-mail lines. And it doesn't stop there: the List becomes an overnight sensation, grabbing the interest of local newspapers and television coverage. No one expected this avalanche of attention for something that began as a joke among friends. And the joke turns deadly serious when one of the four women is murdered...

The prime suspect in the case is the victim's boyfriend, who was one of a number of men who found the List sexist and offensive. But an impenetrable alibi gets him off the hook. Now, with the help of Jaine's neighbor, an unpredictable police detective, the puzzle must be solved -- and time is running out as a deadly stalker targets the three remaining friends. Now, knowing whom to trust and whom to love is a matter of survival -- as the dream of Mr. Perfect becomes a chilling nightmare.

Putting her "trademark darkly sensual style" (Booklist) into high gear, New York Times bestselling author Linda Howard creates a tour de force of passion and suspense in this electrifying new page-turner, and proves that appearances can be deceiving -- and deadly.

5 out of 5 stars Fast Paced, Awesome Romantic Thriller   March 7, 2008
I took a break from my historical romance novels and read this. Boy am I glad I did. It was a page turner, reading it in 2 days. I loved how Jaine and Sam said and did what they felt, too many H/H don't act on their true feelings- they just meshed together after the initial idea of trying to exist as neighbors. The chemistry between them was great and the book made me laugh over and over again. I truly enjoyed this book and you will too!

4 out of 5 stars A ton of fun! - one of my fav from LH   February 4, 2008
Super fun and super cute! It's not supposed to be a serious or terribly believable book - and if someone was expecting it to be such, that might explain the lower reviews. However, the plot line was cute - a group of friends get together over lunch to put together their list of "mr. perfect" and suddenly... they begin to drop like flies. Jaine is the heroine, she is sassy and spunky and utterly likeable...not to mention her hunky next door agent neighbor Sam who makes it his business to protect her once her friends start dying... simply adorable! Definitely recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Mr. Horrible   January 15, 2008

I CANNOT BELIEVE ALL OF THE 4 and 5 STAR REVIEWS! NOT EVEN WORTHY OF 1 STAR!!!!!

"Mr. Perfect" was a pathetic excuse for a novel. Horrible writing and dialogue throughout. Every other line seemed to be "he/she burst into a roar of laughter," when the previous sentence was a far-fetched grasp for humor--not witty or funny at all. And the attempt to make a brutal murder mystery packed with witt and jokes was just in bad taste if you ask me. How can anyone relate to that? Especially because none of the attempted humor was the least bit funny, just ridiculous and awkward.

Basic premise of the book: Four 30-40 something coworkers go out to dinner every Friday after work. One evening they decide to make a list of attributes of the "Perfect Man." Someone at work leaks the list and it is published in the office newsletter. For some reason, "Good Morning America," interviews the 4 friends and reports this list as headline news. A psycho finds out about the list, is enraged by it and goes on a murdering rampage. The murder mystery was so predictable, I knew who the killer was about 200 pages before Linda Howard intended.

Meanwhile during the psychotic murder mystery, the heroine Jaine and the hero Sam Donovan (the hunky next-door neighbor, who is a detective) have lusty sex once or twice, right after one of Jaine's closest friends is brutually murdered. Would you really be intersted in sex at a time like that? And to top it off he asks her to marry him and she agrees after having sex once and knowing each other for about a week. The sex scenes were rough and harsh--nothing romantic here--trash actually.

I'm sorry I finished this. Don't waste your time.

This is 3 in a row for me where Linda Howard has struck out big time. No more Howard for me, I think.

3 out of 5 stars Not as enjoyable as other works   December 2, 2007

I am a big Linda Howard fan, and elements of this novel were certainly entertaining. On the whole however, this is my least favorite L.H. novel to date.

It is hard to put a finger on exactly why this novel failed to jell for me. I did not find the smart-aleck heroine to be all that interesting or sympathetic. The national furor generated by "The List" also seemed thin to me. The relationship between hero & heroine felt a little flat - some of the initial dialogue struck me as far-fetched rather than sexy, and it was hard to buy their sudden profound love and commitment to each other.

It was worth reading once (or twice), but I don't think it is going to remain in my permanent Linda Howard collection.
