1 out of 5 stars This Book Lacks Any Credibility   June 26, 2008
Mimi Uptergrove strongly defends popular superstitions about the existence of ghosts and other paranormal phenomena. Yet her book is filled with contradictions. Early in the book she indicates that ghosts are simply an "imprint" of a former human being, an energy manifestation that is seen but not heard. But later in the book, when she has really warmed up to her subject, the author says, "Respect the dead. Always speak clearly and in a non-confrontational manner when addressing a ghost." This book includes numerous interviews with tellers of ghost stories from around Washtenaw County, and details about several of the author's ghost-hunting trips in the Ann Arbor area. Also included are photos of local buildings thought to be haunted.

This book has a total air of unreality about it. One chapter is about a small town "right off I-94." But the reader is never favored with the name of the town. People interviewed are always given pseudonyms even when supposedly they have given permission to be quoted by name. Some of the interviews are conducted, for reasons which we may surmise, in local bars. The author's tape recorder and camera always seem to suddenly malfunction when she has the most dramatic confrontations with the ghostly world. Even the most gullible reader will have trouble with some of the author's bizarre tales. Certainly included here would be the one about the ghost of a wild pig which clawed apart the storyteller's bed.

The author states, "Of course there is no scientific proof through which my hunches and deductions can be verified". Actually it is not just proof that is lacking, but any serious evidence whatsoever.
