Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Lemaster Carlyle, the president of the country's most prestigious university, and his wife, Julie, the divinity school's deputy dean, are America's most prominent and powerful African American couple. Driving home through a swirling blizzard late one night, the couple skids off the road. Near the sight of their accident they discover a dead body. To her horror, Julia recognizes the body as a prominent academic and one of her former lovers. In the wake of the death, the icy veneer of their town Elm Harbor, a place Julie calls "the heart of whiteness," begins to crack, having devastating consequences for a prominent local family and sending shock waves all the way to the White House.

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading   July 31, 2008
The story begins with a African-American couple (Julia and Lemaster Carlyle) having a car accident, then discovering the body of a man (Kellen Zant) who was left off the side of the road. The couple know the man. Julia once had a relationship with Zant. As the story progresses Julia becomes involved in solving the mystery of Zant's death. Before his death, Zant provided clues for Julia to solve a conspiracy lasting more than 30 years.

I enjoyed the book though not as much as I had The Emperor of Ocean Park. This was not a direct sequel to Emperor but does have a familiar name or two within its pages. One of the problems with the story in my opinion is that the author included characters and settings that really weren't relevent to the overall mystery and did not move the plot forward. It slowed the pacing of the story and at times became a distraction. Dispite the distractions, Stephen L. Carter put together an excellent mystery, gave rich descriptions and strong characters.

4 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this one   July 23, 2008
I was facinated by the stories about the black social clubs. I thought the plot was great. It dragged on a bit too long. There were a few run-on sentences. At one point, the author confused me about the plot. This is a solid 4 - 4.5 star read.

3 out of 5 stars New England White   July 19, 2008
I found New England White to be an extremely well written book. However, overly long and in need of editing. The premise was good but it took too long to get there. Much of Mr. Carter's excellent writing skill was taken up with lengthy descriptions that weren't always germaine to the plot.

A good mystery is hard to put down. The fact that Mr. Carter's presentation was excellent, made it the more disappointing when the end never seemed to arrive. Instead of not being able to wait until the next page, I felt more that I couldn't for the end to come.

3 out of 5 stars A Good--but Long Read   July 11, 2008
I bought this book becuase I liked The Emperor of Ocean Park. I couldn't put it down--until I was about two thirds of the way through it. Then it became so pedantic and wordy I had to force myself to finish it.

Read it if you are into university life, New England, or upper-crust African Americnas.

But by the time you fnish it, you will be furious you spent so much time geting to such a trivial ending!

2 out of 5 stars Good writing...desperately needs an editor   June 28, 2008

It's a bad sign when you lose track of the original plot because the author spends so much time on a separate plot.

The author describes every detail of every character and everyone's past to such an extent, the book has no forward momentum and eventually you lose interest.

I couldn't even finish...every 10 pages or so there is an interesting development, but not enough to keep me interested...less would have been a lot more.
