Product Description An arsonist has struck a top-secret research facility at a key US naval base. But it's not just a random terrorist attack. These people were after something specific. When Special Agent Patrick Bowers is called in to investigate, he is drawn into a deadly web of intrigue and deception. Good Book! October 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I loved the first book and this one was really good, too. I just didn't find it as addicting as the first one. I couldn't put The Pawn down, I read it in one day. This one kept my attention and the story was great and well written. It is worth reading if you liked the first one as it definitely continues the characters stories well.
Couldn't put it down September 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
OK, I'm not as well-spoken nor do I have the same insight as the rest of these reviewers, but I grade a book on a single criterion: whether I can (or want to) put it down. I am almost embarrased to say that I read this entire book in 2 sittings (at least it was a weekend).
Steven develops his characters well and you don't have to read The Pawn (the first in the series) to understand The Rook, but you certainly will appreciate it better if you do.
Very suspenseful. If you're looking for a thoughtful thriller, this is it!
The Drama Continues September 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Book 2 in the Patrick Bowers series finds Mr. Bowers on the case for an arsonist, whilst still trying to juggle being a father to an, adolescent teenager, an underlining love interest, and the introduction of a master nemesis known as the shade. As I mentioned in my review of The Pawn (The Patrick Bowers Files, Book 1), these novels are unusual for the Christian market. The Christianity is toned down, but the under current of it runs through the seam of this adventure.(Like real life) We are also confronted with the evil that so often makes the headlines in our daily papers, the motivation for such acts, and how we as human beings respond to such crimes. I love the detail the Mr. James brings to each novel, and the fact that everyone, whatever their world out look can relate to the issues and situations featured here. The pace really picks up towards the end of the novel, to the point that I could feel my pulse quickening: always the sight of a great thriller. I really enjoyed this, and look forward to 'The Knight, Patrick Bowers Book 3.
Crazy good! September 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I can't say enough about this author and this series. Steven James knows how to craft a story. He has admitted that he doesn't want to get bored with what he's writing, and the complex plot structure in The Rook only serves to prove that he's serious about creating a page-turner. Believe me, there's absolutely no time to get bored with James' stories.
Patrick Bowers is again on the case, one which involves a serial arsonist. When he accidentally stumbles across a wacked out homeless man committing suicide, Patrick knows there is more to the incident than meets the eye. Clues lead in unexpected directions, like to an aquarium, shark research, and stolen technology with global implications.
While embroiled in the puzzlement of his job, Patrick must also build a relationship with his angst-filled teenaged stepdaughter. Between girl and woman, she longs for freedom, yet makes unwise choices that force Patrick to monitor her activities. Can he protect her from the world while letting her grow up? Might she be entangled in his investigation like she was during the last case?
One of the first things I noticed about this novel, second in the Patrick Bowers series, was the lack of creepiness. Yes, the villain(s) is/are still evil, but the tale has a different feel. The author has stated that he wanted The Pawn to feel more like a psychological thriller and The Rook to feel more like a techno-thriller. I say he was successful. It's really incredible how involved the story becomes up until the very end, when, as all good books do in my opinion, the reader experiences a big twist.
Whether for personal entertainment, a book club, or a gift, be sure to pick up this electrically-charged action-lover's dream. I can't wait for the third installment, The Knight. I wonder if the series will have to end after James uses up all the chess pieces (only 3 more!). That will be a sad day.
Great Thriller!--4 1/2 Stars September 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Pawn is among the top five books I read this year, so I was anxiously awaiting The Rook. It met my expectations. It was both intriguing and pulse pounding, with the strong characters I loved in The Pawn.
In the sequel to The Pawn, Agent Patrick Bowers finds himself in San Diego in the midst of a serial arsonist investigation. He decides to bring his step daughter Tessa so they can spend some quality time together. During a very interesting dinner, Bowers accepts Tessa's challenge to predict the location of the next fire. They head to a seedy part of town where they encounter a deranged homeless man who turns out to be a key component of their investigation.
I always enjoy discovering how authors develop their characters in a series. Sometimes the characters remain the same, but the best ones grow. Watching Patrick and Tessa has been a joy. I've have loved seeing their often strained and hostile relationship transform into genuine love and acceptance. I've found myself more than once wanting to nudge either Patrick or Tessa in the direction that would bring them closer together. Often times it happens, but like real life, often times it doesn't. While these books are primarily action, suspense, the building of relationships is what makes them incredibly enjoyable to read.
There were some very frightening ideas in The Rook, including Bowers' internal struggles. In a real and brilliant manner, James depicts the dark side in all of us. Little actually separates us from the horrendous people Bowers' pursues. Highlighting the fact, that the heart in each of us is desperately wicked.
I actually liked the story in The Pawn better than The Rook. There were parts that seemed forced and a little too convenient. There are some plot twists, but with one exception, it was pretty obvious what was coming. The characters were amazing. Each character was written with a personality that begged the reader to know them more. I am loving to see Tessa's development.
Overall, The Rook was equal to The Pawn, though I don't think it was better. It's a very solid series and I am anxiously awaiting the next one!
