Product Description
At the turn of the quattrocento, when the mysteries of the new world threaten the belief systems of the old, a girl with hair as black as a raven's wing, and skin as white as snow, comes of age. The Papal States are ravaged by marauding forces of condottieri, Savaronola is burned at the stake, and the famous Borgia family recipe for poison has to be located in the Vatican files. A Snow White story of affecting poetry and romance, Mirror Mirror constitutes the world of the Renaissance as a troubled and magical time in which Vatican corruption, Atlantic exploration and conquest, and the secrets husbanded in Byzantine monasteries come to bear on the life of Bianca Nevada. This abandoned girl of Tuscany has had the misfortune to fall under the charge of one of history's most mysterious villainesses, Donna Lucrezia of the Borgias. It's all here: why the eighth dwarf left his brothers, why the hunter spared Bianca's life, and what happened to the deer who gave her heart to be brought as proof of the girl's murder...The novel continues in the spellbinding tradition of Maguire's earlier novels, as Bianca Nevada comes out of the shadows, to ask of the reader: Well? Who is the fairest of us all?

Interesting Take November 9, 2008 This was a pretty good read overall. I thought the development with the gooseboy was an interesting take, but for the most part it was rather slow reading. I thought the characters were all full and believable, albeit eccentric like most of Maguire's creations.
Disappointing and Crude October 29, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
(This review is based on the audio CD version of this book. It is my understanding that the audio is a word for word representation of the book.)
I borrowed the audio CD of this book from the library to enjoy on a long car trip. After receiving many recomendations to read one of the author's other books ("Wicked"), I thought this might be a good substitute since "Wicked" was not available and the premise (re-telling of the fairy tale, with a twist) was the same. I couldn't have been more disappointed.
I'd like to be able to give credit to the author at least for his creativity, but I cannot give much. The text was full of unnecessary crudity and the plot was very weak. The ending was a complete disappointment - there pretty much wasn't an ending at all.
The author could have done so much more with this story. I continued to listen to the CDs in hope that the story would get better and would lead to some kind of great ending. Instead, the tale continued with gross and disturbing references that in no way added to the plot or character development, and the story went nowhere.

It took about two weeks for the book to arrive. It came in almost new condition. A few of the pages were bent (like a page marker) but it came in very great condition. I would buy from this user again.
Good October 8, 2008 I agree this was a bit slow, but the writing was beautiful. When compared to the others by GM, it suffers somewhat, but if it was the only book he'd written I'd have been blown away.
Still great October 2, 2008 While this has been my least favorite of the Maguire books that I've read (although, admittedly I have not read Lost, which I've understood to be not quite Maguire caliber) I am still awarding it 5 stars because it was still one of the most amazing reads! I have said this is in other Maguire reviews, but I love the worlds he creates. The imagery and storytelling is unrivaled. I love that he takes incredible scenarios and makes them totally believable, such as the dwarfs, the apples, etc. All of the magic and fantasy that happens in the worlds Maguire creates seem totally plausible and time and time again I find myself getting wrapped up in his stories. If you've never read a Gregory Maguire book, I'd suggest Wicked or Confession of an Ugly Stepsister first, but if you are a fan of Maguires works this will not disappoint at all!
