As sexy and healthy as the beautiful cover October 2, 2008

I must admit that I have become a fan of Dr. Gina Ogden, and her incredibly warm, helpful and well-received series of books on her sex research. The Return of Desire is the second of three books that she bases on her large survey of what women (and some men) really feel about sex. Following the highly respected The Heart and Soul of Sex, this time she fearlessly confronts head-on the profit-driven medicalization of women's sexuality, employing her unique holistic, positive approach to better understand the rich complexity of desire and sex. She counters the quantitative approach of most sexologists who just like to count organs and their, shall we say, intersection.
From the astounding number of her completed surveys - 3,810!, Ogden gained a nuanced and enlightening picture - one that reveals women's sexuality to be far more complex than the arithmetic of penile/vaginal penetration, one that embraces their physical, mental, emotional and, of particular interest to Ogden, spiritual lives.
Ogden's last chapter looks at "What Women Want," in the context of the belief that desire doesn't always bubble up spontaneously, but often requires "conscious preparation." Based on her decades of therapeutic experience and the richness of surveys that reflect real women's voices, Gina Ogden's The Return of Desire offers valuable, compassionate and joyous direction for women rediscovering or reinventing their sexual passion.

Is there a 10 star rating? Because The Return of Desire deserves that and more. I purchased this book without any prior knowledge of Dr. Ogden, or her works, based on a general recommendation as a gem of a book. Now that I have finished my first book by Dr. Ogden, I am hungry to read every single thing she has written! The Return of Desire is about so much more than just rediscovering your sexual passion, it is about ALL facets of our tender, sexy, feminine, fragile, strong, luscious sensual, sexual self. This book is nourishment - through and through. A literary version of a much needed daily supplement vitamin for our wellspring of desires. I am now giving this book as a loving gift to all of my girlfriends. Keep em coming Gina Ogden! And thank you so very much.

I liked "Return of Desire" by Gina Ogden enormously. It is a generous and courageous piece of work....and a wonderful contribution that will benefit women (as well as men who read it) everywhere. The insights are profound and deeply moving. The scholarship is rich in data and scope. The Druid Vow of Friendship is now on my desk.
In addition, Gina Ogden's writing style is fresh, authentic, delightful and provocative. And through it, she educates and inspires her readers to reach new heights of insight, consciousness and sexual awareness. I recommend this book highly.
Mid life sexuality September 1, 2008

A friend recommended Return of Desire to me, and it turned out to be right on target with some of my questions and concerns regarding sexuality in mid life. Gina Ogden's theories and ideas are completely in tune with another aspect of life that I am currently exploring. It's a nice fit. I am ready to expand my own sexual desire beyond the limits that I currently place on it.
