IF YOUR JUST TRYING TO PASS THE TEST, IT'S THE BOOK FOR YOU! August 28, 2008 I've taken over 10 CLEP tests before. Prior to taking the psychology CLEP I already knew what to expect, and having actually many university level classes, CLEPS are a piece of cake. Now for the psychology CLEP, I only studied for THREE DAYS. That's it. However, I studied day and night, so don't get the wrong impression, I definitely crammed the material. When the test day came, I easily scored a 58, which I think is extremely well for studying only three days. Honestly, I've never put in more than ten days of studying for a CLEP and have managed to pass every one, including Algebra, Mathematics, Precalculus, Human Growth & Development, Western Civilization I & II, English I & II, Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, and Spanish. However, for some of the harder tests, outside resources should be taken into consideration, but not for psychology. If you read the book a few times, which isn't very thick, about 2-3 hours worth of reading, then you'll be able to pass the CLEP easy. I recommend taking a CLEP over the class any day if your just trying to get the credit, but don't count on CLEP being extremely thorough. If psychology is your major, your better off taking the class in order to better know the material, but if your like me and just need the credit, this is the book for you. However, if your aiming to score about a 60, you NEED to use outside materials like other books and the internet in order to get a higher score. Keep in mind that CLEP is just a pass or fail exam, it makes no difference whether you score a 50 or an 80, as long as you pass. However, your score does make a difference in the three different Language CLEPs that are offered. The Bottom Line - Buy this book if you need the credit, its more than enough if you study it, if I can do it after studying only three days, anybody can, the CLEP exams are CAKE!
Great CLEP study guide June 21, 2008 This book does a great job of giving the student an understanding of introductory psychology that is more than adequate to pass the CLEP exam. NO, you don't learn absolutely everything to cover absolutely every question you will see on the exam, but there is more than enough material here to get a passing grade. This book covers the required subject matter in a bit less than 100 pages. Unlike the REA book on US History that I used, this text is easy to read and understand. The language is concise and clear.
The sample tests on the CD are very representative of the quality of questions you should see on the real exam, and the software is similar enough to the real thing that you will feel right at home when you take the test.
I would recommend that you look up the key people mentioned in the book on Wikipedia or a good Psych textbook and have a clear understanding of their contributions and concepts, but other than that, I think this book pretty well covers most of what you will need to do well on the test.
cover was misleading but still a helpful book and disc May 21, 2008 cover stated 3 full lengths practice tests but the disc only included two. Still was helpful though.
Accurate representation of clep test March 29, 2008 The writers of this book have an uncanny knowledge of the test because they obviously trim out most of psychology (to fit it into 100 quick pages) yet they seemed to hit most of the topics actually tested.
Having some experience in neuroscience and psychiatry, I studied about 4 hours and scored 76. All I did was read through once and take 1 practice test. For those not familiar with the clep scoring, it's 20-80, with 50 being a "pass" I believe.
Know this info -- you will pass. March 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Method I used to score a 70: 1. Read this book; mark things you feel you don't understand. (~4hrs for me) 2. Use a psychology textbook to read about the areas you struggled with. Take a few notes. (~12hrs for me -- I'm a slow learner) 3. Read the CLEP book again. (~2hrs 2nd time through). 4. Go take the CLEP! TIME SAVING ANALYSIS: Studying for CLEP ~18hrs VS. Taking the class ~40hrs in class + ~25hrs homework (low figure)=65hrs. Minimum time savings - 47hrs(wow!) MONEY SAVING ANALYSIS: CLEP test and study materials - $90 VS. Tuition and textbook - >$700 Savings >$600
