| Editorial Reviews:
Book Description Whether parents are planning a day trip, a weekend excursion, or a longer stay, this book will guide them through the many activities southeastern Michigan has to offer. Even those already familiar with the region will discover original and intriguing adventures; complete recommendations for entertainment, educational activities, and indoor and outdoor fun; and ideas on how to entertain the family regardless of the season or weather. A discussion of Detroit's past and present, a list of recommended web sites, and a calendar of festivals and events are also included. In-depth coverage of the Detroit area is provided, including must-see sites like the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, and less-celebrated attractions like the many distinctive neighborhoods and the views from the Detroit People Mover. Also featured are the rolling hills and lakes of northern Oakland County and the arts-oriented climate of Ann Arbor, home of the University of Michigan.

You want color? Read Conde Naste. You want some very cool, beyond-the-norm things to do and places to visit with your kids? Buy this book. Look, keep taking your kids to chain entertainment venues and predictable afternoon excursions and that's how they're going to think when they get older -in an unoriginal and boring fashion. This book, I think, is rife with great, dare I say it, exciting destinations full of zeal and originality. Give to your kids something they can tell and describe to others their age and you're giving to them an advantage Nike doesn't make and The Gap can't market. It's the one book I know of where you could flip randomly to a page, go experience one spot on that page and not be disappointed. But, if you like sitting on your rump, eating [bad stuff] and fighting for an original thought, than you might be better off with Major Magic's or the mall. Big ups to the author for creating a fool-proof, one-of-a-kind guide to our righteous metro Detroit area and beyond.
Something more suitable for negative reviewers August 27, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In response to R. Wade and "A Reader from NYC:" Probably a more suitable local guide for the two of you would be "A Pathetic Single Mother's Guide to Wallowing, Bitching and the Art of Gluttony." Perhaps a technical writer could author such a work, but the skill level probably just isn't there.
Not your usual travel guide July 29, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you want the usual listings drivel for tourists, then, yes, go buy the AAA guide and learn all about how to get to crowded campgrounds and outlet malls. But if you're truly interested in your children's education and entertainment, this book is wonderfully written from a lifetime Michigan native who "kid-tested" her carefully selected listings.
Snoooooze July 24, 2003 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have lived in the mitten state my entire life. I love it. Michigan ROCKS. This book is more like a funeral dirge... I think that is a common problem with these low budget tour book companies that churn out books about places written, very often it seems, by non natives. I think you are better off using AAA guides.
One more time, with feeling! July 24, 2003 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I travel for a living and have to go to Detroit quite a bit. People often groan when I tell them that but I have learned that Detroit and its surrounding areas have a lot to offer! I was disappointed with this book because of its colorless, soulless treatment of a very dynamic place. It reads more like a term paper than a travel guide. I have read guides to Michigan by seasoned writers who treated the subject matter with the heart and excitement it deserves. I would definitely pass this one up and keep shopping.
