Product Description Not all yarns are alike. Some make our hearts and hands sing, some get the job done without much fanfare, and some cause nothing but frustration and disappointment. The gorgeous pair of socks that emerged from their first bath twice as long as when they went in. The delicate baby sweater that started pilling before it even came off the needles. The stunning colorwork scarf that you can’t wear because the yarn feels like sandpaper against your neck. If only there were a way to read a skein and know how it would behave and what it wanted to become before you invested your time, energy, and money in it. Now there is! With The Knitter’s Book of Yarn, you’ll learn how to unleash your inner yarn whisperer.
In these pages, Clara Parkes provides in-depth insight into a vast selection of yarns, giving you the inside stories behind the most common fiber types, preparations, spins, and ply combinations used by large-scale manufacturers and importers, medium-sized companies, boutique dye shops, community spinneries, and old-fashioned sheep farms. And, because we learn best by doing, Parkes went to some of the most creative and inquisitive design minds of the knitting world to provide a wide assortment of patterns created to highlight the qualities (and minimize the drawbacks) of specific types of yarns.
The Knitter’s Book of Yarn will teach you everything you need to know about yarn: How it’s made, who makes it, how it gets to you, and what it longs to become. The next time you pick up a skein, you won’t have to wonder what to do with it. You’ll just know–the way any yarn whisperer would.

Great for Novice to Master Knitter June 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As President of Signature Needle Arts yarn makes our needle business possible. This book is fantastic--whether you have just started to knit or are the most experienced. All the information about fiber and yarn manufacturing you have ever heard (and a lot you probably don't know) is in one place. It explains so much about what a knitter experiences from one yarn type to another. Understanding of the basic raw material of all knitting projects will prove invaluable and save time, expense and the heart-break of choosing the wrong yarn. Knitter's Review is a great website, but this book should be on every knitter's shelf as a reference.
Good Book... June 18, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is a good book on yarns...however not for beginners...unless very very interested in yarns. The yarns specified for the projects are quite expensive and hard to get....
Great purchase June 2, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found this book after reading about the loss of one of the shawls from this book. Excellent guide to yarns and the patterns just add more to the knowledge of using the yarns. Also the patterns are great too. The pictures are clear but they are presented in an old fashioned way reminding me of an old Hungarian book's pictures. I prefer glossy.

Wow. I'm only sorry I put off getting this earlier... I have so many knittig book duds - preordered, going by past history, etc etc, that I had resolved to wait and see what reviewers said before ordering more knitting books. I should have known better, as Clara's site is excellent. This book is even better than I thought it would be. Information about yarns, their makeup, what the different fibers and plies are best suited to, even patterns - it is amazing.
Thanks for an excellent book from a long time website admirer :)
