Encyclopedia Of Movies June 25, 2008 Mr. Maltin has done a great service to movie buffs like myself. It's very important to me to know the names of the actors while watching the so-called old movies on TCM and AMC.
I don't know what's wrong with these channels now days. They do not show the credits at the end of the movies. Neither do they inform us during a movie "you are watching so and so and so." Mr. Maltin's guide takes away the frustration of these iniquitous acts by the cable companies.
Thank you
A staple in our house June 19, 2008 Where would we be without this wonderfully helpful, sixteen-hundred-page book? Not only do Maltin and staff discuss and rate movies, they now include brief filmographies of the biggest movie stars and best-known directors.
IMHO Maltin's touch with the judgement is firm as a rule. He is sensitive to the needs of family viewers but certainly has his own standards as to what constitutes a good movie. This doesn't always mean I agree with him: he gave the 1983 movie version of BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES a "BOMB" rating (less than half a star) -- and called it "appallingly heavy-handed." C'mon, was it really that bad? For what it's worth, amateur Amazon reviewers were all over the place with their ratings, but it averaged three stars out of five.
There are a wrinkle or two the prospective buyer should know about Maltin's MOVIE GUIDE. For one thing, it does not claim to have every single Hollywood release. Two I've noticed missing in this latest version are MYSTERY STREET, a noir film well-known enough to be included in one of the anthologies Amazon sells; and GOVERNMENT GIRL, a 1943 wartime comedy starring Tammy Grimes.
Also, the alphabetization in the book is STRICTLY letter-by-letter. Spacings and punctuation don't count. Thus MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS precedes MR. SKEFFINGTON, because M-R-S-H precedes M-R-S-K. That's easy to get used to, though, and should not obscure the fact that this is a tremendously good movie book to keep handy, available at an outstanding price.
Missing Movies May 19, 2008 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought the newest version of this book last week. The FIRST time I tried to use it to look up a movie, it was NOT among the "17,000 titles," despite having been made in the 90s, and including such stars as George C. Scott, Catherine Zeta Jones, Eva Marie Saint, Peter Gallagher, Marilu Henner, and Roger Rees. It was running tonight on the "Ion" station, and is the 1996 version of "Titanic." It was not good, but it could have at least been included with a bad review. That is what this book is for, to look up movies like this. If a movie starring George C. Scott and Eva Marie Saint is not included, what else is missing?
Great Resource Guide March 26, 2008 I agree with others reviews about quite a few of the 2007 movies not being included. That being said, if you are looking for a complete resource to help you build your DVD home-delivery queue, this is it.
OH, SO MANY, AND SO LITTLE TIME February 26, 2008 A great guide for movies you want to see; and for those you don't want to see. Very comprehensive, and does not force feed the reader into liking or disliking the review. As objective as one could be. CAUTION: if over the age of 50, the print is not user friendly, of necessity. Maybe more information than I needed, but that's o.k.
