4 out of 5 stars Great course -- too bad about the typing   June 6, 2007

I found this course very helpful before I went to study at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. It covers lots of useful vocabulary, and it's loaded with clear descriptions of how the language works. The BEST part of it is the set of accompanying practice tapes which are sold through the University of Michigan. There are 9 cassettes for Volume One and 12 more for Volume Two, in which the vocabularies and all the dialogues and readings are recorded. Best of all, they contain plenty of material for oral/aural practice.

If you're interested in SPEAKING AND UNDERSTANDING Hebrew, this is the best way to do it, not by puzzling out written material that you're not even pronouncing properly.

But speaking of written material, it's a shame that these two volumes are in such an ugly format. I guess it was produced before everyone had Hebrew on their computers, so the author had carefully TYPED it all on a typewriter. The English doesn't look bad, but the Hebrew looks terrible.

For this reason, I still glance through the book for a refresher on whichever grammar point is being covered, then CLOSE it again and just concentrate on using the tapes, which cover the subject more completely than any others I've seen.

4 out of 5 stars Good for educational use, in or out of the classroom.   June 25, 1998

This is a very good and educational book for any class room, and easy to continue education at home without the help of an instructor. I would recommend "Lessons in Modern Hebrew Level 2" when finished with this book to further any education in the Hebrew language.
