A little wisdom never hurts February 17, 2006 This work is organized by subject alphabetically, and has an excellent index by author. The brothers Safir(e) have searched far and wide and collected thousands of small sayings for instruction and delight. There is much triteness here, and it can be tiresome to read a lot of this at a time. Nonetheless there is much 'wisdom' here and the organization by subject makes it seem as if each 'entry' and the sayings contained in it constitute a kind of mini- essay on this subject. Here is one piece of such wisdom I particularly love. It is by Anne Frank on the subject of 'beauty'
"I don't think of all the misery, but of the beauty that still remains...My advice is: Go outside , to the fields, enjoy nature and the sunshine, go out and try to recapture happiness in yourself and in God.Think of all the beauty that's still left in and around you and be happy."

The preface of "Words of Wisdom - More Good Advice" sent even this well-read quote afficionado running for my dictionary. Mr. Safire's witty introduction certainly carried a lot of weight! I found the quotes well-organized and enjoyable to read. The flavour of this book is definitely to the sardonic side but is very witty, thoughtful and useful. A little large to pack around with you but a nice volume for bedside reading.
Clever but not profound August 19, 2005 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is not the fault of Safire, but I was looking for a book which contained a few more profundities and a few less amusing quips. Not what I was expecting, but my wife seems to like it.
Great Gift for High School Graduates February 3, 2001 8 out of 13 found this review helpful
I found this book extremely useful in college. It has great quotes and short stories on a varity of subjects, all in alphabetical order. It was the most useful in my speech classes and any class that required a paper.
