I sppreciated the edition of Merriam's I had in high school, which was worn with use, but as a 28 year-old law student I find the selection of words narrow and depressing. There's what I consider to be an irritating amount of slang in the volume and the defintions are alternately too brief or vague to suit my tastes. I think it's probably more suitable for teens, or undergrads (?). For older adults I'd suggest it as a secondary reference - for those who write on a regular basis Oxford's is still the best.

This is a slightly simplified version of the Collegiate Dictionary. It is great for student use or for Scrabble or other word games.
