3 out of 5 stars The Nineteenth Century Prayer Book   January 15, 2008

The history of the editing and publication of the Book of Common Prayer is both fascinating and controversial. This prayer book was published in the in the Eighteenth Century. It was wonderful that the University of Michigan Library preserved this book and released a facsimilie edition. In structure and format, this book doesn't divert significantly from the English prayer book of 1662. The King James Version is the translation used in both books. What is different in this volume are the several American rituals (such as "The Thanksgiving of Women after Child-birth," "Forms of Prayer to be Used at Sea," and "A Form of Prayer for the Visitation of Prisoners.") The two books are a good comparison of the similarities and differences between the expression of the Christian faith in the rites of the church in America and England. This a good volume to add to one's collection of prayer books.
