Product Description
Deepak Chopra brings the Buddha back to life in this gripping New York Times bestselling novel about the young prince who abandoned his inheritance to discover his true calling. This iconic journey changed the world forever, and the truths revealed continue to influence every corner of the globe today. A young man in line for the throne is trapped in his father's kingdom and yearns for the outside world. Betrayed y those closest to him, Siddhartha abandons his palace and princely title. Face-to-face with his demons, he becomes a wandering monk and embarks on a spiritual fast that carries him to the brink of death. Ultimately recognizing his inability to conquer his body and mind by sheer will, Siddhartha transcends his physical pain and achieves enlightenment. Although we recognize Buddha today as an icon of peace and serenity, his life story was a tumultuous and spellbinding affair filled with love and sex, murder and loss, struggle and surrender. From the rocky terrain of the material world to the summit of the spiritual one, Buddha captivates and inspires—ultimately leading us closer to understanding the true nature of life and ourselves.

Excellent book May 6, 2008 I have read several other Deepak Chopra books in the past, but this one feels different. Style of writing is a lot easier to read and this fictionalized version of the life of Buddha makes for fascinating reading. Growing up in India, I had some understanding of Buddha's life and wanted to know more. I could not put the book down till the end. Strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in knowing more about Buddhism and how it evolved.
Loved it! May 1, 2008 Deepak Chopra is one of the few authors who seems to just get better with age. Not only is this novel informative from a historical basis, it is also inspiring and uplifting. I listend to the 9 hour audio book while on a long car trip. Loved it!
Decent April 25, 2008 Quick fun read. I did not know anything about Buddha or Buddhism and this was a fun way to get introduced to the general history of where he is from and what his philosophy is about.
Karma, and how to dead with it April 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've read quite a few of Deepak's books, he's written over 50 of them, and this one has become my favorite. In all the books I've read, all non-fiction works, Deepak Chopra, our personal liaison to the East, gives us much content, and although his books are sprinkled with his own personal stories, I've never thought other than, well this is the truth. This is the way it is. But in this fiction book, I find myself looking at how it is written, and how the man crafts the story. Being a fiction writer myself, I recognize how good a writer he really is.
"Buddha - A Story of Enlightenment" is fiction, it's a novel, but it is so much more than that. It's the familiar story we all know of Siddhartha, the prince whose father, the king has protected the boy from the grossness of the world, because the astrologers have foretold of his spiritual greatness. He has been sheltered from the sight of sickness and death in the hope that the he'll grow up to be a warrior king like his father. But Deepak wraps around this old familiar story, an engrossing tale of romance, good and evil, life and death, treachery, war, love, hate, emotions and murder, all the elements we readers have come to love in a novel.
This book could have been called, "Karma and How to Deal with It." It's a three part story. Part One - Siddhartha, the prince who abandons his wife and his inheritance and is reborn as the monk. Part Two - Gautama, the monk, who takes the aesthetic life to the extreme of almost dying and is reborn as The Enlightened One. Part Three - Buddha, the fully awakened one who has risen above the world of illusion.
Deepak may have this in mind already, but I'd like to see novels from him on the lives of Jesus and Lao-Tzu and Mohammed and other religious leaders. This book is a mixture of a historical novel and insight into spirituality, I thoroughly enjoyed and I'd recommend it highly.
Great read! April 21, 2008 I really enjoyed this novel about Buddha's life! Chopra does an excellent job fleshing out the known details of his early life and, at the same time, giving the reader a basic understanding of the man and origins and basics of Buddhism. I highly recommend it!
