Get two copies, one for yourself and another one for a friend August 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I "stumbled" upon Laura Wright's book at a local bookstore, and spent twenty minutes or so looking through it and reading excerpts before enthusiastically purchasing it. (I'm much more discerning and slightly less impulsive when it comes to buying books than I used to be.) For me at this point in my life, QUIET MIND OPEN HEART is one of those ten books I would want with me if I were stranded on a desert island for a year. Her Quaker background and Buddhist practice make a wonderful combination. She is not afraid to periodically use the word "divine," which so many authors who share insights about Buddhist practices shy away from. In my opinion this is not a book you read straight through; instead, it is one in which you will find nourishment as a result of reading just a little bit at a time. As far as journaling goes, there is much to get you started or keep you going, whether you respond to the reflection questions or to something in the text itself. The last two chapters on affirmations and meditation are ones a person can turn to at any time to find a refreshing word or grounding practice. On my "to do" list is to go and buy a copy for my wife. I wouldn't be surprised if she, in turn, ends up buying a copy for one of her friends. I hope QUIET MIND QUIET HEART reaches the hands and heart of many, many readers. A tangible act of self-love would be to get a copy for yourself; a loving gesture for someone you care about, whether they are struggling or not, would be to get another copy for her or him. You will be grateful. Your friend will be grateful. And I am most definitely grateful to Laura for writing this wonderful book. Thank you, Laura!
a better way July 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just spent the last hour journaling, and find that even the simplest questions Laura Wright poses lead to rich and helpful insights. Incorporating guidance from several different spiritual disciplines, she illuminates both the necessity and the joyful promise of the reflective, responsible path in life. Her writing is elegant and crystal clear; her suggestions for meditation are a true pleasure to follow. I am sincerely grateful for the intelligence and learning Laura Wright has so generously poured into this enlightening book. I believe many will feel the same.

I strongly recommend this book.
Extremely insightful, very well written, easily understandable, and most of all - inspiring. Characteristic performance by an excellent author. This beloved author has an amazing level of Attainment in the her spiritual path, clearly is a first rate educator of the practice of journal writing, and happens to be a Yoga teacher as well. (You should see her in person! Wow!)
All this shows clearly in this text which reaches and teaches the reader on so many levels: from fundamental and solid spiritual progress, no matter the reader's religious persuasion, to totally useful methods of using journal writing as a developmental method of character and self discovery.
That last part was the core of the text for me, and it is an excellent teaching tool, successfully getting this lazy person to WANT to write in his journals and to benefit so completely from doing so. It has changed my life. I have two copies of the book along with two journals so one is always with me. No matter the problem or occasion, I am prone now to sit and write and benefit from that. I can't say strongly enough that no matter WHO you are, you can't walk away from going through this tremendously well expounded text and not be a better, calmer, happier, more insightful person.
A deep bow to this author. Thank you for helping this one's path in life.
