Product Description

Another delicious treat full of Southern sass, wit, and charm from the New York Times bestselling author of Savannah Breeze and Hissy Fit

Chef extraordinaire Gina Foxton doesn't expect anything to be handed to her on a platter. After years of hard work, the former runner-up Miss Teen Vidalia Onion is now the host of her own local Georgia public television show called Fresh Start, and she's dating the show's producer.

But when her show gets canceled—and she catches her boyfriend in flagrante delicto with the boss's wife—Gina realizes that she's meant for bigger and better things. Namely, a gig on national television.

The Cooking Channel is looking for its next big star, and Gina is certain that she fits the bill. Trouble is, the execs also have their eyes on Mr. "Kill It and Grill It" Tate Moody, the star of a hunting, fishing, and cooking show named Vittles. Tate is the ultimate man's man, with a dog named Moonpie and a penchant for flannel shirts. He's also a tasty side of beef with a swooning female fan base. All Gina has on her side are a free-spirited, college-dropout sister and a mother who calls every single day.

Little does Gina know, though, that she and Tate are soon to embark on the cook-off of their lives, spiced up by a little ingredient called love.

4 out of 5 stars Andrews latest is her funniest   August 25, 2008
6 out of 6 found this review helpful

Her show public television cooking show is on the verge of cancellation since her boyfriend Scott bedded down the sponsor's wife, but a chance for a slot as the newest face on the Cooking Channel has Gina Foxton ready to rumble. Her competition is sexy Tate Moody whose own show on the Southern Sports Channel aptly titled "Vittles" features a kill it and grill it approach to cooking. Good ol' boy Tate even has a scenery chewing dog named Moonpie. When the TCC producer has a difficult time selecting a show, he opts to have a reality cooking competition. But along the way, the competitors manage to fall for each other, tossing a wrench into both their plans.

I loved her first three novels, but this is easily Andrew's most laugh out loud funny novel to date, but by no means is it perfect. The name of Tate's show alone had me chuckling every time is was mentioned. And Gina's bad hair days... just about any gal can related. I did think that the romance was a little weak. It was too contrived after the two faced out as adversaries - there was no real defining "aha" moment where I felt that they truly changed their opinion about the other. I thought that the first competition was hilarious, but the two follow up ones were lacking in originality or suspense. But overall, the story is so well written, the pacing is great, the dialog heavy on the Southern dialect yet easy to understand, and the plot executed really well. It's a true step up from her novel "Savannah Breeze," which I could barely get through. I debated on getting this novel since I didn't care for the last one, but I am so glad that I did - I managed to read it in a day!

3 out of 5 stars A Fun Fluffy Read   August 18, 2008
I love "Savannah Breeze" and thought I would enjoy this one. I do enjoy it but it is really light and fluffy and cute. It was perfect for a activity-filled week out of town and it was something I didn't have to think too hard about. This is one of the better summer books out there ... perfect for those days at the pool and at the beach.

This book focuses on two hot shot cooks with their own cooking shows and an opportunity to go national if they win this cooking contest. There's Tate Moody, an outsdoor man who fishes and hunts and prepares delicious meals on his show, "Vittles." There's Regina (Gina) whose home-spun show has been cancelled due to her ex-boyfriend's affair with the sponsor's wife. After having her heart broken by Scott, the producer, she enters the contest so she can have a chance to save her career. Together, Gina and Tate produce more than just delicious dishes, they also have chemistry with sparks and flares setting off at every chance encounter.

It is really a cute book. However, I must recommend that her editor and proofreader do a better job of catching several mistakes in the book because this book is riddled with typos and other errors. Otherwise, it would be a four-star book.

Perfect summer reading. There's even recipes at the back of the book for those who would like to try them.

5 out of 5 stars Take this to the beach!   July 15, 2008

This is another great one from one of the best authors writing today. The main characters are believable, all-too-human and very engaging. The reality show and the behind-the-scenes of what goes into such programs was amusing. I laughed out loud through the whole book, but my favorite part was the end when the two newlyweds have their own show. The name was perfect!
Thanks, Mary Kay Andrews. Any new title of yours will always be very welcome to this reader.

4 out of 5 stars Reality TV Mixed with Appetizing Recipes - Yum!!   July 15, 2008
Mary Kay Andrews delights her readers with a delicious mix of behind-the-scenes reality TV moments and some really yummy (sounding, anyway - I haven't quite tried anything yet, but I'm going to!) recipes!! Gina Foxton is the star of her very own reality TV cooking show and having a romance with her producer, Scott, and is just about to take a summer hiatus from filming when she finds out that her show has been cancelled by the producer - and all because Scott was caught having a fling with the producer's wife!

Gina has no idea where her career is headed but she's very sure that she's through with Scott until he gets her a chance to go up against hunky Tate Moody in a reality TV "Food Fight!" where the winner will have their own show on the Cooking Channel.

Initially, the two competitors get on each other's nerves. Tate thinks Gina's culinary viewpoint of "fresh and healthy" meals sounds boring - he'd much rather go hunting, "kill something & cook it" for his rustic man's man cooking show "Vittles". Gina thinks Tate is a "roughneck" but she hears that the ladies love him (including her little sister Lisa!) and once she meets him, she must admit he is kind of cute. The book takes another romantic turn as we wonder if Tate will feel the same way about Gina. Gina also finds herself "nose to nose" with Tate's adorable dog, Moonpie - she doesn't mean to let him out of his cage, causing all sorts of trouble on the set - but that's just for starters; the main entree of this "food fight" involves limited ingredients in the kitchen and an island out in "the sticks" - at least Tate seems to be in his element, he's used to rustic living, but all Gina's got is a golf cart and she doesn't know how to hunt!

Those who love food and the Food Network will certainly have a lot of fun with this novel, as you can imagine the stars of some of your favorite shows going through the antics they come up with to get an episode "in the can". Andrews also gives the ingredients of some of the recipes prepared on "the show" and I am looking forward to the tomato soup chocolate cake!

This was a fun story and Mary Kay Andrews serves it up "southern style" and sets the background vividly and give us lots of personalities that help out the main characters as they go about their battle. At the end of this tale, we find out just who wins their own cooking show and find out if romance is going to be their "just dessert"!
