MUST HAVE for PANDA FANS August 26, 2008 This is the absolute BEST film for panda lovers. Absolutely adorable footage of the baby pandas at Wolong Nature Reserve in Wolong China. This film captures the babies in play and makes you feel as if you are there. Children will love this film too. I bought this film for my 3 year old niece and she adores it. After watching it I bought one for myself! I highly recommend this film if you LOVE the Giant Panda.
Virtual Panda Exhibit April 10, 2008 Remember back in the 90s when those DVDs of fish swimming were popular and people turned their TVs into "fish tanks" during parties? This is just like that, but of Pandas. There is no narration and this is not a documentary. You just watch Pandas play in China. My near 2 year old is really into Pandas and she watches this DVD over and over. I thought it would be educational in a traditional sense like a National Geographic, but it is so much more. Narration would have ruined this video. My daughter makes her own observances and comments, not repeating some voice-over. I am so surprised by this DVD and am lucky to have found this treasure.
Terrific for kids -- and grown-up panda lovers too October 8, 2007 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
There's a lot to love about this wonderful DVD -- starting with the footage itself. It was apparently shot at a panda breeding program in a nature preserve in the Chinese mountains where pandas live in the wild. Because it's a captive breeding program, the cameraman can get incredibly close to the younger cubs as they eat, climb, play and explore; and even shoot the older, more rambunctious "teenage" pandas from a reasonably close vantage point. You as a viewer are right there, looking in their eyes, hearing their odd little grunts and whimpers, almost feeling their breath. But since it's also a nature preserve in the mountains, the scenery and setting are quite spectacular. You get the best of both worlds: the scenery of a nature documentary, with the up-close-and-personal footage of a zoo video.
Secondly, there's the way the soundtrack is handled. You can choose three different "panda guide" soundtracks -- for younger kids, older kids (about 9-12), or adults -- or no guide at all. For each version, there are actual kids or adults interacting with the filmmaker, so it's not some producer's idea of what kids might want to know, it's what kids actually want to know. The filmmaker handles each different group respectfully and directly. He doesn't condescend to the kids, or overwhelm them with too much information. The interactions also don't seem scripted (the children's laughter is unmistakably genuine), so you ending up learning different things with each different soundtrack. This isn't a real science-intensive production, but you do learn quite a bit about pandas' lifecycles, how they live in the wild and how the captive breeding program works.
Watching without any guide is also surprisingly enjoyable. You just hear the actual sounds of the preserve: birds and those odd baby panda noises. There are also 5 charming songs by a performer with an oddly appropriate middle name, paired with footage that's mostly different from the rest of the DVD. You can see the lyrics onscreen if your kids want to sing along.
In the end, though, you'll be watching this for the pandas themselves -- incredibly clear, close enough to touch. The cubs are absolutely irresistible as they shuffle around, play with each other, tumble over themselves and explore their world. It's just impossible to watch this and not smile!
Great Kids' Movie October 3, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This DVD is a great choice if you are looking for something fun and educational for your children. One of the best features is the different types of audio you can listen to while you watch, each geared toward a different age-group. Thanks to "younger kids", "older kids" and "adults" narration, everyone and anyone can enjoy learning about and watching these pandas. If you want to see some cute and amazing pandas, this is the DVD for you! The sing-along songs are also really fun :)
Was I ever pleasantly surprised! October 1, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I got this DVD right away because I love pandas, and I go to the National Zoo and watch their panda cam whenever I can. I half expected this to be another run-of-the-mill documentary about pandas, but I'll watch anything that has a panda in it. Was I ever pleasantly surprised! The panda cubs on this DVD are far and away the cutest I've ever seen, and they're not in a zoo; they're in a panda preserve in China where they play with each other all day and have fun adventures. Plus this program doesn't have a narrator, but it just lets you watch the pandas without any interruption. But then I turned on one of the optional soundtracks and I loved hearing the little kids talking to the director about pandas. These kids are as cute as the panda cubs. When one of them asked, "Why are pandas black and white?" another little girl answered, "Because they're related to penguins?" I also loved the music videos, especially the one called "Panda Bear Hug" showing the mama panda with the tiny baby. This DVD is one of the best I've ever seen.
