5 out of 5 stars Tired of piles? This book can help   April 9, 2008

This book has examples and advice for people with serious hoarding problems but the advice and exercises are helpful for those with more mild cluttering problems. Both my wife and I read the book and found ourselves energized to clear our space. It covers some of the reasons to be motivated to clear your space and some of the not so obvious roadblocks that get in your way. For example, are you a perfectionist about where everything should be and how it should be disposed? This can cause you to end up with piles to go to right places but too tired or busy to get them there.

2 out of 5 stars This is for the very bad compulsive horder who probably needs more than a book to help.   April 7, 2008

This book had some great idea's however the issues in my family are no where near as bad as this book tries to deal with.

While this book had suggestions to help solve hoarding issues, the idea's were general, and it seemed to recommend using professionals (both mental health providers and organizers).

I also ordered Peter Walsh's Book "Its all too Much, How to live richer with less". I enjoyed reading that one much more, and it had practical advise that we could use. It also had suggestions on how to deal with family members who have a hard time getting rid of things.

If your hoarding problems are extreme this book may be helpful, but I would recommend Walsh's book for those who are just need a point in the right direction, or advise on how to start a discussion with a family member.

4 out of 5 stars Hoarding   March 3, 2008

As a Professional Organizer that works with hoarders I find this book a useful tool to help family and friends get a better insight into the mind of a hoarder. Organizers will also find this book very useful. I would also have any person interested in helping someone get started in decluttering his or her home read this book. The authors have plans in this book that are both useful and insightful to help in the decluttering process. This book is short to read but long on knowledge and facts. Everyone that reads this book will have a better idea on what hoarding is and how to get beyond it.

5 out of 5 stars Help for the hopeless?   February 29, 2008

If you live with a hoarder you will recognize your situation in the first few pages. Not only do they understand the inappropriate behaviors of the hoarder, they also deal with the unproductive behaviors of the people who live with them. The book provides some realistic strategies for the hoarder to learn how to make decisions. The only thing lacking is how to get the hoarder to read the book and decide to put it to use.

I found this book to be a real eye opener. I have bought more books on getting organized than most people have books in general! This is the first one I have read that actually gets to the root of my problem. I have always just thought of myself as a messy slacker. Now I understand the reasons I have trouble getting rid of things or sorting through things that I have collected for years. The fear of letting go has been explained and has actually made it so much easier to LET GO! This book also has sections for the people around me (husband and kids for me) to read and see what I am all about, and helping these people be supportive and not just critical. I truly wish I had found this book years ago. I can honestly say it has changed my life.
