Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Since the original publication of this landmark volume, tremendous advances have been made in understanding and managing psychological factors in pain. This revised and greatly expanded second edition now brings the field fully up to date. Designed for maximum clinical utility, the text shows how to tailor psychological treatment programs to patients suffering from a wide range of pain problems. Conceptual and diagnostic issues are discussed, widely used clinical models reviewed, and a framework presented for integrating psychological treatment with medical and surgical interventions. The second edition has been augmented with detailed case material and the latest treatment outcomes data. Thirteen entirely new chapters provide coverage of specific pain syndromes and disorders, as well as interventions for pain-related fear and preparing patients for implantable technologies.

I was looking for a good overview of the current understanding of pain and how it is applied to various groups and it gave me what I needed. For professionals and academics.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a clear and comprehensive practical guide   June 8, 2000

As a psychologist who specializes in working with people with chronic pain, I have waited years for a comprehensive book that could answer my basic questions about strategies for effective pain management. This is the book. I have used it both clinically and as a reference for my own writing and teaching. The book is very well-written, not too technical and maintains a high standard for the information included. Every attempt has been made to validate recommended approaches with solid research and suggestions with limited or mixed research results are clearly indicated. The authors have selected an outstanding mix of contributors, each recognized as experts and authorities in the field.
