Editorial Reviews:

Book Description
With the rapid growth in telecommunications markets, this unique guide is thoroughly updated to reflect state-of-the-art knowledge in oscillator design. Rhea demystifies the design of L-C, transmission line, crystal quartz, and SAW oscillators. Numerous examples and case studies offer real-life perspectives, while cutting-edge computer simulation materials enhance the book's usefulness. (CAD techniques are integrated into processes from start to finish.) And the approaches presented can be applied to any active device and any resonator technology, ensuring the book's readership for years, to come.

1 out of 5 stars a sleeping pill   May 26, 2007

Like other Rhea's books, this one put me to sleep after a few pages. I tried again when I woke up, and I found that Randall's verbose style is poor and technically inaccurate, to the point that his book is confusing at times.

2 out of 5 stars OK but not great   September 10, 2003

It's a fairly readable book, but there are quite a few errors.

The book is strongly based on the open-the-loop method to find loaded Q, but this method is heavily flawed due to the impedances where the loop is broken being not known.

4 out of 5 stars OK   June 17, 2003

Many example circuits, resonator topologies and other useful information.

4 out of 5 stars A valuable and very practical book by a leading RF designer.   May 20, 2002

This is an excellent book which introduces all the concepts in an easily understood form and which has proven very valuable in day to day design of RF oscillators. If you need to begin designing oscillators then you should seriously consider adding this to your collection.

If you want to deal with some of the more advanced topics then consider getting a copy of Microwave and Wireless RF synthesizer theory and design by Ulrich Rohde which has excellent chapters on oscillator design.

Now if we could just persuade Ulrich and Randy to write a book together.........

3 out of 5 stars Good book with lots of errors   March 17, 2002

This book was valuable for oscillator design. It contained a lot of information that I was unable to find from other sources; however, the book contains several confusing typos and errors.
