Book Description
Escape to the "Michigan Riviera," home to historic lighthouses, sophisticated art colonies and the best beaches in the Midwest. Starting just outside Chicago, our handy guide follows the east shore of Lake Michigan to the tip of "the mitten," and then on to Mackinac Island. Climb a giant sand dune, browse antique shops or pick your own blueberries. Whether you're looking for a family vacation or a romantic weekend, we'll help you plan the perfect getaway.

• STEP BACK IN TIME - we'll show you where to watch musket battles at colonial forts, stroll Victorian-style streets or hail a horse-drawn taxi on a car-free island

• PLAY OUTDOORS - ride dune buggies, cycle miles of paved bike paths, sail a tall ship or hike to a remote lighthouse

• BE INSPIRED - admire golden sunsets on the lake, thick forests blazing with autumn color and spectacular freshwater dunes

• GET CULTURED - explore artsy Saugatuck, sample choice vintages on Leelanau Peninsula and visit the former haunts of Ernest Hemingway

• DIG IN - sample the freshest local seafood at chic bistros, enjoy a burger at a classic drive-in diner and save room for exceptional cherry pie

• REST EASY - the best places to stay, from beach campgrounds to historic B&Bs and funky retro motels
