2 out of 5 stars Not very good for beginners, seems outdated   July 15, 2008
I just began fishing. I purchased this book at a great price and in excellent condition from Amazon, but was not impressed by the contents. The diagrams are confusing and the material just seems outdated. This did not help me at all learning to fish.

5 out of 5 stars This is a helpful book   June 23, 2008
I recently took up fishing after 20 years of avoiding the outdoors. I found that I really enjoyed fishing with my young son but I didn't know anything about what lures to use or how to tell where the fish were in the water. The chapters on where to fish and how to read structure are very helpful. The chapters on different fish and what lures they bite are also very helpful. Using the information on how to read the water and what lure to use, I selected a fishing spot and landed a bass within 5 minutes.

2 out of 5 stars Not too bad, but there are better books out there   January 20, 2008

The second half of the book (chapter 6 and forward) is OK. It's objective and useful. But the way the first half is presented is confusing and left me with a lot of questions. The basics of fishing techniques and tackle are not organized in a very intuitive way. I had to buy another basic book (The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fishing Basics) to get a better idea and have my questions answered. The explanation on when and where to fish is pretty decent, though. Towards the end of the book, however, two chapters are wasted with instructions on how to make your own lures. I think that belongs in another book.

1 out of 5 stars NO!   October 31, 2007

This book's topics are so broad there's no possible way he can thoroughly cover ever topic. There is just not enough depth to the information.

4 out of 5 stars Fishing basics   September 19, 2007

This is a good book. It really identifies the best places in a given area to fish. Some of the illustrations can be a little hard to understand due to it being in black and white. The fish identification guide is great, to bad there isnt any writing on actually cooking the fish, this would really round it out. This book would make a great addition to others you may have.
