Book Description
DK's Bicycle Repair Manual is a comprehensive, practical guide to the essentials of bike maintenance, designed to teach the beginning cyclist how to perform basic tasks and the experienced cyclist how to carry out advanced repair techniques. In clear, straightforward detail, the book explains the evolution of the bicycle and the maintenance needs of different bikes, shows how the parts of a bike fit together, and tells you how best to use your tools to perform basic tasks such as cleaning and lubricating.

Sidebars such as Servicing Charts, Troubleshooting Charts, and Toolboxes help you diagnose problems before they occur, and deal with them accurately and efficiently. Each spread is supported by graphics, photographs, and a Step Locator, to help you easily locate problem areas. This edition, updated with 23% new material, is pocket-sized for portability, with flaps to easily mark your page.

1 out of 5 stars Tell me the What, but don't tell me the How   May 21, 2008

It's nice to see that Mr. Sidwells has so many friends to write down glowing reviews for his book.

As a prior reviewer stated, this book will only tell you the What, not the How. You need the How or you're going nowhere.

Save your money and go on Youtube; there are qualified people who have created video tutorials during their lunch break that will answer your questions.

This book is going in the recycle bin as we speak.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!   November 2, 2007
Easy to understand, learns bicycle basics and helps to care about it for the weekend rider and also to the daily training competitor.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Home Bike Mechanic   September 30, 2007
I have worked on bikes at my house for over 25 years and this manual is PERFECT for the home mechanic. The photos and RIGHT TO THE POINT details will help get you back on the road or trail. I live in Arizona and prefer to fix my bike at home vs. back and forth to the shop. I still take my bikes to the shop for an Annual Cleaning and Tune Up. I do this for safety reasons and to check out new bikes. Keep on Biking!

3 out of 5 stars OK book, but title is a bit off   March 18, 2007

Just got "spammed" by Amazon to write a review, so here we go:

Content: This book gives you an overview of most parts of the bike, with the most common variations on a part (usually mountainbike, road bike and hybrid or BMX). It is not exhaustive and not entirely up to date, but it will give you an idea of how a bike works. It is NOT a "repair" manual, it is however a "bike parts for dummies" book and a bit of basic maintenance.

What it did for me: I did not know much about bikes before the weekend, today I walked into a store and ordered an entire bike part by part. The book allowed me to understand the basics, the internet filled me in on the specifics.

In short: if you already know what a bottom bracket, a V-brake and a crankset is and if you can tell apart a threaded headset from an unthreaded, stay away from this book. If not, and you don't want to look stupid on your next visit to the bikeshop, lay out the 11 bucks. It will also help you a bit on basic maintenance, but not on repairs.

3 stars because it's good value.

4 out of 5 stars Covers the Basics   March 5, 2007
The manual is good on the the basics. It explains in clear steps with helpful photos. I would buy again.
