If you think of your pet as a family member, it only follows that Fluffy should come along on family vacations. But between "no pets allowed" signs and over-the-top surcharges, it seems like your only option for accommodations is a tent. For travel anywhere in North America, those options are about to change, thanks to Traveling with Your Pet, a comprehensive and easy-to-use guide for AAA-rated lodgings that welcome four-legged guests.

Most of the book reads like any standard travel book. Arranged alphabetically by state, you'll find hotels in both small towns and major cities, with a list of icons showing what amenities you can expect. Instead of descriptions of restaurants or spas, you'll find a sentence or two outlining pet policies. Here, a careful reading can save you a bundle. Although many hotels are happy to house animals, surcharges range anywhere from $5 total to $100 per night and, in some cases, only particular species of small size are accepted. This section cautions readers to confirm the current policy in advance. The last thing you want to discover upon arrival with your two labs is that the policy was changed the day before you made the reservations.

Other than these listings, information is relatively limited, but can be helpful to newcomers to the world of pet vacations. Contact information is provided for several airlines, as well as emergency animal health-care suggestions and advice for buying safe traveling equipment. Dog owners will appreciate the list of off-leash dog parks throughout the U.S., which includes rules for national parks and forests. In fact, with all its practical information, you may find this book puts your regular pet sitter out of a job! --Jill Lightner

Product Description
Updated annually, the AAA PetBookr features more than 13,000 hotels and campgrounds in the United States and Canada that accept pets. This comprehensive guide also includes more than 400 pet-friendly private campgrounds, dog parks and pet-friendly attractions. Practical tips on border crossing procedures, what to pack, who to call, and details on traveling with your pet by car or by air make this a truly invaluable travel companion.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff here   July 26, 2007
While this book arrived too late for the actual planning of my recent trip to pick up a dog it would have saved me hours of research had I had it from the beginning. If the listings aren't complete there is certainly enough information there to give you the opportunity to find what you are looking for. Just having the central reservation lines of the large motel chains is a help in finding out if the individual properties accept animals is worth the price of the book in itself.

I found it spotty in finding information on where public areas that accepted my dog on or off leash could be located. I picked up (a lot) more and better information from the surfing the internet and talking to folks along the way.

Even with its shortcomings it was worth the money - I'll use it frequently.

4 out of 5 stars A necessity when taking car trips with dog   March 22, 2007

7 months ago I packed a U-haul to move from Ohio to Washington (state). My two puppies made the journey with me. I don't know what I would have done without the book. It was invaluable to finding lodgings for the night. As with AAA's hotel rankings and reviews, most were dead on.

The book advertises that it contains information on dog parks. I do not recommend this book if you want information on dog parks. It would be better to research the area and its dog parks ahead of time.

Excellent, accurate book that allowed us to plan our trip without worrying about where to stay with our pet. I loaned it to a friend who was traveling out west and they loved the book so much I gave it to them and now have to buy another copy! I keep it on file should we ever have to evacuate due to a hurricane. We'll all go to the same hotel with our pets!

4 out of 5 stars Reliable guide for pet-friendly lodging   August 17, 2006

Just put this newly purchased guide to the test during a trip through parts of Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas with our 60-pound dog. The hotel and motel listings are very accurate and up-to-date, so we had few surprises when calling to book rooms or arriving at properties. The only improvements I would suggest are more recommendations for outdoor dog play places (especially those that are leash-free) and for restaurants with outdoor dining areas that permit dogs. We had fairly good success improvising leash-free play zones in national forest areas off the highways and were able to find some eating places with patios or decks that permitted dogs...
