Great read. July 12, 2008 This is a great book. Perfect for our unit study about the First landing. It's addictive for me as an adult, but easy-enough for my 4th grader to read it and enjoy also. I'm excited to use this when school starts again.
Historical Fiction At Its Best March 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Blood on the River brought the Jamestown experience to life for my students. The use of primary sources to begin each chapter helped them to see exactly how historical fiction is created. In this case, each chapter was based on actual letters or excerpts from books from the early 1600s.
The young Sam Collier is believable, and we rooted for him throughout the story. My hope is that the descriptions of his adventures will remain in the minds of my students long after the lessons from their Social Studies text book do!
Terrific book: Blood on the River February 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I know what you're thinking. This is going to be a boring book about indians. You think that this is going to be an extremely boring book that will not come to your liking. That's what I thought at first too. But believe me, this book will be like nothing you have ever read. Even if you don't like anything about history, the strengh of the characters and the emotions that you will experience in the book will make all of the reading worthwhile. I would also recommend this book to people who love a lot of action. Despite the sometimes sadness and sometimes happiness that you will experience, this book will make your heart beat hard with the action that is in it. The book is about the first settlers of James Town and Virgina. They need to survive harsh winters and hard attacks from the Powhatan indians nearby. That is what makes this book the most exciting. That is why this is a great book, and I think that many people would agree that this is one of the best books of all time.
A Teacher's Perspective December 7, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am reading this book aloud to my fourth grade class. All fourth graders in our state study Virginia History, and we just finished covering Jamestown. This book is bringing the story alive to them more than anything else has before... including a trip to the settlement site itself! They are begging for me to read everyday. This book is historically factual and absolutely riveting. It is a must have for adults and kids alike! Well done, Ms. Carbone!
Blood on the River May 17, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
1607 was a big year for America. It was the year that settlers came to America and in the end it was how the country started. Blood on the River ia a fictional book, based on a historical event, written by Elisa Carbone about the first ship to come to Jamestown. It is written in the prospective of an English boy coming to America. The boy's name is Samuel and he is to serve Captain John Smith in the New World. Captain Smith teaches Samuel everything that he needs to know to surive in America.
Blood on the River catches the reader's eye. The whole book was magnificent but the end was the one part of the book that you wouldn't want to miss. The book ended on a very highnote and there was a lot of courage and heroism involved. I like how Elisa Carbone made the characters stand out from the rest of the book. I also like how she incorporated the true facts like the Starving Time even though it was a fictional account.
I didn't like the lack of action. I know some people might disagree with me, but I am a person that likes a lot of action and I didn't see that in this book. I think that she didn't use as much detail as she could have. I think there was more room to add detail without making it too boring. I think that Blood on the River was good for the most part, though.
Above I stated that the author could have added more to the action side. One way that I think she could fix that is to talk more about the battles. I think that the battles were not described as well as they could have been and lacked a lot of detail. From what I know about Jamestown, I know that one of the worst hardships were the attacks by the Indians. I don't think that the book showed how bad attacks were back then.
I think that this would be a good book for you if you like fiction based on history. With 2007 being the 400th anniversay of Jamestown now would be a good time to read Blook on the River. I think that this is a phenomenal book for people that like history or those who are just looking for a fictional book. Blood on the River is a new release so you might want to get it fast or it might be sold out.
