Product Description
Referred to as the "Grand Prix of epidemiology" by The New York Times, this study examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition with surveys from 6,500 adults in more than 2,500 counties across China and Taiwan, and conclusively demonstrates the link between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling!   May 9, 2008

This book was suggested to me as a way I might start thinking of re-evaluating my diet. I was convicted by the research and conclusions and have DEFINITELY re adjusted my diet to minimize the food groups mentioned.
I have passed the book on to 2 people and they too are very interested in its conclusions!
I highly recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars Don't take this af face value   May 7, 2008

Do your research before accepting this as proof that a Vegan diet is the solution. After chapters touting his credentials, Campbell glazed over his research to try and prove that a Vegan lifestyle is the most healthy. Many of you may know unhealthy Vegans and like me find a conclusion that Vegan is the most healthy diet hard to believe at face value. So I did a review of those reviews that gave this book 1 star. C. R. Moulis "Christina Moulis" thankfully went through some effort to review the real research. Read her review.

I give this two stars because of the research and thought it has sparked me to do since I read it. And I applaud any Doctor who is willing to research Nutrition and try and identify what is "healthy". However we unfortunately live in a world of advertising and I feel that this book is more of an advertisement than giving the whole story. He mentions a study using rats and animal protein, or casein (milk protein). But we never know if these were powders or raw milk from healthy animals. Or if the animal protein talked about is from a plant grazing animal or one that is fed in a feed lot with the cheapest food available.

After reading,Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats
I felt enlightened. The notions and diet suggestions make sense. If we lived in a culture that still raised our own dairy (raw) and meat, we could be more healthy. And we would probably reduce the intake of meat because of the difficulty and unpleasant job of butchering and cleaning. However, most Americans are not able to live this way. And many must be careful because of the number of individuals with dairy allergies. But I can't accept that God didn't intend for us to eat cheese, yogurt, and even ice cream. I'm not suggesting an abundant consumption but in moderation it is just a food that can't be evil due to the pleasure it provides our palate.

For the summer months when one can plant a garden and eat fresh without spending a fortune I have no doubt that a Raw Food Diet would be ideal. Living on Live Food

But in winter when fruits and vegetables are in short supply we need to augment our diet in order to sustain good health. The Food You Crave: Luscious Recipes for a Healthy Life

However I do believe that more research will soon find that high animal protein diets are not healthy, they just don't make much sense. Even Whey and Soy Protein powders just don't seem right. Humans were not created to drink powder. I feel like a pirate on Davy Jones' crew when my food is turned to powder. Eating that way just is not pleasant, food was created to satisfy and fulfill our natural cravings. But in order for the cravings to be more natural you must detoxify.

I look forward to the day when we can get the real story, that is not tainted by lobbyists and propaganda. When Nutrition, Health and Medicine can congeal together so we can have a healthier society. For now I will continue to search and use my own gut instincts to help me find truths from falsehoods.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT'S THE CHINA STUDY?   May 3, 2008
7 out of 9 found this review helpful

This book discusses the China Study, which examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition using surveys from 6,500 adults in China and Taiwan. This investigation shows a strong link between good nutrition and avoiding or reversing obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The author concludes that a plant-based vegan diet is the best strategy for health and longevity. The author is a strong critic of the western diet, the Atkins diet, and diets that emphasize animal products. The book also criticizes the way nutritional information is obtained, disseminated, and put into practice in the west.

The author makes the point that nutrition research and studies often isolate certain nutrients or food groups in order to determine their effects. He is, however, presenting the effects of nutrition on health when there are many other factors that affect health and lifestyle including hygiene, air and water pollution, exposure to environmental toxins and chemicals, exercise, genetics, etc. The author has strong and convincing beliefs about nutrition and its benefits to our health and uses the China Study research to support his theories. He is clearly sincere about wanting to help people improve their quality of life and provides concrete suggestions to help the reader change poor eating habits into good ones. His ideas include that heart disease can be reversed by diet, breast cancer is affected by hormones in the blood which are determined by what we eat, dairy products increase prostate cancer risk, antioxidants in fruits and vegetables positively affect mental function in old age, Type 1 diabetes is linked to infant feeding practices, and casein protein from cow's milk is cancer-promoting while proteins from plants including wheat and soy are not.

The China Study is an impressively large survey of health and nutrition habits that the author concludes supports a vegan diet. The Chinese diet is lower in meat and dairy than the Western diet, though it is not vegetarian. The book, however, is an impressive work by a researcher who passionately believes in a vegetarian diet and wants to help people live healthfully. Most people would find it interesting and useful. I certainly agree with his suggestions to eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, and nuts, and to limit animal products! I also recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams

4 out of 5 stars Very useful support for a change in eating habits   May 2, 2008
3 out of 5 found this review helpful

This book summarizes the incredible large-scale study of diet and health that draws some potentially uncomfortable conclusions about the typical American diet. As a motivation to seriously consider making the switch to a vegan diet, the book is powerful. I only gave it four stars because I felt it could have presented more of the study's data and details and spent less time recounting the efforts of the food and drug industry to promote different ideas. The events covered in the fourth section began to come across as a bit of a paranoid rant (though I don't doubt at all that it is true).
