Good Idea July 26, 2008 i feel this book is helping me alot.. i failed my first semester off nursing .. re took the course and passed.. now im using this book as a refresher so when i go into the next semester i feel a little more prepared. :)
It can't hurt March 19, 2008 If you are NOT yet a nursing student then it can't hurt to check this book out for some insight into what nursing tests MAY be like. This book covers topics such as developing a positive mental attitude, managing stress, critical thinking definitions, time management, study techniques, test taking techniques, how to answer multiple choice questions and the nursing process. There are several "sample" tests for you to practice.A student that really suffers from test anxiety may find this book helpful for test taking tips and encouragement. However to the person that is already a strong student you may not get as much help from the book. This book was highly recommended as an "optional" text (by the tutoring department)for my nursing program so I did buy it (used). It is interesting but I am hesitant to say its helpful. As another reviewer mentioned, once you start nursing school forget about reading this book altogether and just focus on your school reading. I have done well so far in school (nursing 101) and it was simply from hours of studying and reading the assigned material NOT figuring out secret test taking techniques. Also, unless the professor that is writing the nursing exam reads, agrees, and follows the test taking principles of this book you may be out of luck. In some ways this book makes multiple choice questions very complicated, talking about stems with a positive or negative polarity, clang associations, and identifying "clues" in the stem. I reviewed this book before starting my first semester and was getting really worried about the "complexities" of nursing multiple choice questions. Yes the test questions can be tricky and often you will have narrowed the answers from 4 down to 2 but in the end only understanding the material will help you pick your answer. This book will not teach you how to think critically. In summary, it's not a bad book just not the answer to "passing" nursing school. I rated it 4 stars because it is organized, interesting, and gives lots of practice problems to give you a feel for nursing tests. However, if you are going to purchase this book buy and read it BEFORE you ever set foot in the classroom. I would only purchase this book at a discount price or try to perhaps check it out of the library.
great for beginning students September 24, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
this is great for beginning nursing students.
It tells you exactly what kind of questions will be in the nursing school exams. It is not as simple as you had in pre-reqs.
This book got me thru my first semester, and 1/2 of the people in my class failed. I thank this book for helping me pass!
If you want A's Read this book June 23, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I can not say enough good things about this book. I bought it just after starting nursing school and would read sections of it as I had the time. It helped me really have an edge over the nursing exams from the on set. While other fellow students were struggling with how to "read" nursing test questions (which can be very tricky), I understood exactly what the question were asking, and the techniques to answering them. Although I studied very hard in school, I credit part of my straight A's to this book.

As a nursing instructor I found this book to be very informative & comprehensive.Good for implementing critical thinking exercises. I am very satisfied with my purchase of this book, it is just what I have been looking for as a supplement to our current textbooks.
