Editorial Reviews:

Product Description

Her sleazy husband left her for a lingerie model who's barely more than a teenager, and her kids are busy with their own lives. But before Miriam Elizabeth Swanson can work herself up into a true snit about it all, her newest tenant, Liz, arrives from Birmingham with plenty of troubles of her own. And then Miriam meets a man named Harrison, who makes her laugh, makes her cry, and makes her feel like a brand-new woman.

It's almost too much for one Manhattan quasi-socialite to handle—so Miriam's escaping to the enchanted and mysterious land of Sullivans Island, deep in the low country of South Carolina, a place where she can finally get her head on straight—and figure out that it's not pride that's going to keep her warm at night . . .

4 out of 5 stars land of mango sunsets   June 26, 2008
alot more drama in this particular book; enjoyable, but not as likable as others by d.b.frank

3 out of 5 stars wanting more   June 21, 2008
I love Dorothea Benton Frank. However, the Land of Mango Sunsets left me wanting. BTW - I am the main character's age, so there was a lot to potentially identify with. Some situations were dealt with too thinly. The message is wonderful. Kevin was hysterical. However, an entire book could have been written about after Mellie's mother died, the Harrison story. As usual she makes me laugh out loud but I didn't find the depth of her other works in this one.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful, quirky read   June 20, 2008

I can see that DBF hasn't lost her charm with this book. After reading Bulls Island, I was hoping (with fingers and toes crossed) that her magical writing style hadn't disappeared. It didn't. Not in this book, it didn't. This is a heart-warming gem of a book set in the colorful low-country. This one has the depth of character development that I so love.

Miriam Elizabeth Swanson is a rich and priviledged woman who has gotten bitter over time since her divorce from her philandering husband, Charles. She lives alone in the townhouse with her pet parrot, Harry (who, I might say is a real character!). Estranged from her sons, Miriam lives only for her daily chats with her tenant upstairs, Kevin, and for her charity committees commitments. Miriam flies home to Sullivan's Island to visit her mother, Miss Josie (another delightful character). Something that her mother said to her in their conversation before Miriam flies back home to NYC struck a nerve in Miriam and Miriam started to wake up from her despondent state of affairs and found joy in life again.

This is a quirky tale of a divorcee, who discovers that there is more to life than what she has been experiencing. It is a delightful tale that is bound to warm your heart and makes you remember why life is so delightful after all. Yes, it is such a happy-go-lucky tale with a predictable ending, but who cares? Sometimes, those are the best kinds of novels to soothe your soul especially after a long day of chasing kids and everything else that comes in the way of reading a juicy book.

If you're looking for a quick and enjoyable novel, this one definitely fits the bill.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best work   June 15, 2008
I have enjoyed all of her books but I just could not connect with these characters and the story line seemed a bit predictable and contrived.

5 out of 5 stars Great, now I'm hungry   May 28, 2008
First of all WOW.
I cried and laughed in public. What a delightful book with such great characters. Kevin is my favorite gay guy ever- he puts Jim from Isle of Palms to shame. This book echos Plantation- which is my favorite. The scene at the wedding with Pricilla and her mother giving pearls. I'm telling you DBF is the BEST writer of mother daughter scenes. I cried like a pig. I was just so impressed and proud of her ability to create this reality in my heart. It is back to her style of dreamy and heart warming.
I have only one complaint.
DBF- you owe me a new pair of pants. My jeans do not fit after reading Mango. Every other page is full of food. Not just food.... descriptions of mouth watering food. Gah! Hey, if you get tired of writing fiction go work for gourmet mag.....
I love this book.
KEEP THEM COMING!
