Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Maddie Norton had long since resigned herself to her spinster's lot. Her life was devoted to her simple yet enduring faith, to good works and to the elderly lady whose companion she was. She believed herself content. But that was before her mistress's handsome nephew returned to London, after many years spent abroad as an archaeologist.

The shadows in Reid Gallagher's memory-haunted eyes touched Maddie's heart. When he asked her to travel with his family, to help with his work, she could scarcely refuse. And as she came to know this man better, amid the breathtaking beauty of the Scottish Highlands, she began to wonder if two solitary souls might yet find new life—and love—as one.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty typical of this genre...disappointing for a Morren fan.   April 29, 2008

Maddie Norton, a "spinster" who feels responsible for her parents ending their missionary lifestyle, is now a paid companion to Lady Haversham, bored former socialite who dotes on her nephew. Maddie is the first companion who has been able to settle the easily-aggitated/hard-to-please widow and therefore a trusted member of the household staff.

Enter nephew Reid Gallagher, archeologist returning from Egypt during political unrest in the region. He feels guilty for the death of his wife and has never allowed himself to enjoy life because of it. Is it possible that he is gaining feelings Auntie's companion? No, no, no! Impossible!

Is it possible that these two could overcome all odds and find comfort in each other?

Alright. Now, I love Morren's books. She combines innocence and passion like no other author is able. However, this book felt...generic. The plot, while having some interesting details, doesn't have the touch that separates it from other novels. Usually Morren is able to take a simple, over-used plot and make it a mouthwatering page-turner. This one didn't do it for me.

Don't get me wrong! It's a decent book. Entertaining, yes. A good way to waste a couple hours? Yes. A book that will leave you hungry for a sequel? Mmmmmm, not so much.

5 out of 5 stars Heart-Tugging Romance   April 19, 2008

I recently read this delightful historical romance, set mostly in London, England. The ending is SOOOOO ROMANTIC! I highly recommend it.

Maddie Norton works for the demanding hypochondriac, Lady Haversham, as her paid companion. Maddie's parents were once missionaries in the Middle East, and Maddie longs for that kind of adventurous life again. Instead, she faithfully sends her wages to her missionary brother, believing God has destined her for this life of service, since she's nearing thirty and has never married.

When Reid Gallagher comes to London to visit his aunt, Lady Haversham, Maddie gets a glimpse of his exciting life as an archeologist in Egypt. A widower who plans to never marry again, Reid believes his initial interest in Maddie is strictly platonic. But things get complicated when his aunt falsely accuses Maddie of trying to trap her nephew.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, which, at the end, is pleasantly reminiscent of Jane Eyre in its plot twists. This author has such a talent for heart-tugging romance.
