FANTASTIC!!! May 9, 2008 I will keep this as short as possible since everyone who rated this book with 5 stars has basically echoed my own sentiments. Kresley Cole has fast become one of my favorite authors, and I will buy her books sight unseen. As with all her books, Dark Needs at Nights Edge started with a bang and kept me interested all the way through as I anxiously turned the pages to see if a mad vamp and a ghost could develop any sort of romantic relationship. I mean really, could a crazy vampire on the razor's edge of complete madness be sexy and oh so compelling? Could the heroine, who has no real body be enticing and intriguing? Definitely, when Ms. Cole is the author! Once again, I was more than pleased with the ending-- the hero and the heroine gave each other their love, a reason, and the means to truly live. The premise for other books in the series was firmly set and leaves me waiting for the next one! Splendid!!!
Beautiful book, beautiful writing May 8, 2008 Kresley Cole delivers another gripping tale in the fourth member of her bestselling "Immortals After Dark" saga. Set in smoldering New Orleans, this gripping tale of ghost and vampire matches her previous novels -- Cole is a writer of superb quality.
The spirit of Neomi Laress, femme fatale and ballet dancer in the 1920s, was trapped in her stately Louisiana mansion as her former fiance murdered her. Her life since then has been filled with aimless wanderings through the property, desperation for knowledge of the outside world, and loneliness.
But there comes a day when Neomi is no longer alone. Conrad Wroth, a vampire stricken by madness, is brought to her haunting spot to be rehabilitated by his caring brothers. He can see the spirit -- the only person who has been able to since her ghostly creation. But there is more to the pairing of bloodthirsty vampire and ethereal phantom than the fact that they can see one another.
Conrad's insanity is lessened in her presence; Neomi's spirit calms him in ways nearly unimaginable. But there is a theory that she could be his Bride, soulmate to the vampire. The only way this could be determined would be if she were to have corporeal form, and certainly that would be impossible. Or is it?
I honestly enjoyed this book. It was done in a day; I couldn't stop reading it! It's a bit slower-paced than the other books, with tension reigning through the first half of the book, rather than filled with erotica. But it's an excellent read -- her characters' depths just keep getting better and better with each new novel.
As always, Cole provides us with a lusty, heart-warming tale of love and sacrifice in the paranormal realm of the Lore. Beautiful writing, beautiful book.
Great book! May 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed this book! I enjoyed how different it was from many of the books that I've ready lately, in this genre. I had a very difficult time putting this book down long enough to get some sleep last night. For me, that is generally the mark of a good book- whether it can convince my tired eyes to stay up until 4 a.m. .
What a great book!! May 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this series of books. Dark Needs is the latest installment and is about the youngest Wroth brother(vamp)Conrad who is one of the Fallen meaning he has drank his victims to death. His brothers, to save him capture and confine him in Elancourt, a grand 1920's era estate. The brothers are unaware that a ghostly ballerina also resides there and only Conrad can see her. The story is touching, funny and easy to read in one sitting. Conrad and Neomi are wonderful characters, rich and vibrant. You'll find yourself aching for them to find their seemingly impossible happy ending. This one goes on my keeper shelf for sure!
terrific star-crossed romantic fantasy May 6, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
In 1927 in New Orleans Neomi Laress was a highly regarded ballerina when she was murdered by her former fiance Louis Robicheaux. However, she never moved on; instead she has haunted her newly restored estate Elancourt, for the eight decades since he killed her.
Vampire Conrad Wroth hates himself for his inability to control his need for blood. Worried about him, his brothers take him to Elancourt to keep him away from people while hoping he will regain his sanity. However, when he meets the shadowy phantom haunting the estate, he wants to help her, but has no idea how as he cannot even touch her. As they fall in love, Conrad notices his rage and torment has abated andhe prays for a miracle; he turns to paranormal expert Mariketa the Witch to provide the means to achieve his objective.
The Cole mythos (See Immortals After Dark tales such as NO REST FOR WICKED and A HUNGER LIKE NO OTHER) continues to be one of the best romantic fantasy environs for sub-genre fans. The latest is a terrific star-crossed romantic fantasy between a vampire and a ghost; they share in common love and a lust for life though both are not mortally alive. His caring brother and Mariketa add depth to a wonderful tale of a ghost who learns love is so much better on the soul than revenge and an angry vampire who learns love is so much better for the soul than uncontrollable rage. This is another winner from an author who keeps writing super romantic fantasy.
