Product Description
Amalgam Illness: Diagnosis and Treatment starts with a detailed explanation of why to consider amalgam illness to be something that some people must have by comparing the well known statistics for how much mercury people absorb from their fillings to the well known statistics of how sensitive different members of a population are to a given toxin. This is for people who really don't know if they believe in amalgam illness or not (the other material available is rather sensational and I can't blame anyone reading it for having questions) before going any further.

Amalgam Illness: Diagnosis and Treatment discusses how to deal with physicians if you think you have a controversial disease - especially if you have the great "luck" to be covered by a managed care plan.

A key section is devoted to diagnosis - how to tell if you actually have amalgam illness instead of something else. It is also possible to be mercury poisoned from something other than amalgam, and the testing and examination described here is diagnostic regardless of the source.

How to get the dental work done safely if you have decided amalgam fillings are the problem is briefly described - there is a robust industry of amalgam free dentists if you know how to look for them.

The use of drugs and nutritional supplements to get the mercury out of your system is carefully presented - there are some important factors here that are not well described in the previous books on the subject and not all physicians who claim they know what to do actually give good advice.

Then comes what turns out to be the major section of the book - how to treat all the related health conditions amalgam illness can cause so as to relieve them while mercury detoxification proceeds. Since amalgam illness is not widely recognized in the medical community, most people with it get pretty sick before they get motivated to bounce around between doctors and eventually end up in front of one who tells them about it. So most victims have pretty serious, unpleasant health problems (like fibromyalgia or severe allergies) and they really need to make these STOP for the year or two it can take to get fully detoxed and let your body heal.

There are extensive tables of what to use for different conditions, a description of all the drugs and nutritional supplements suggested in the book, and appendices covering things like what the assorted clinical laboratory tests you might get actually mean, what other helpful books are that you might use, and supporting information like what the chelating agents are and how they work.

3 out of 5 stars Very helpful but not well-written   May 23, 2008
This is to encourage potential interest and avoid discouragement out of its presentation. Unfortunatelly, this is not a very well written book, in scientific, organizational or literary terms. It is a compilation, rather than conglomeration, nevertheless a "must-read" reference and guidance not only regarding dental amalgams but in general about mercury toxicity and poisoning. Giving credit to all difficulties including the controversy and uncertainty surrounding the issue of mercury (and other toxic/heavy metal) metabolism, toxicity, exposure pathways, dose-response, symptoms, diagnosis and cure, I think the $40 spent on this book will be one of the best $40's I spent in the entirety of my life. I am yet to see. I might be able to provide a follow-up in about a year.

5 out of 5 stars the best there is   March 17, 2008

This book is your guide to health. It's mine. After all my amalgams are out
6 months ago, I am healing. I am so excited. This book gives you the
-sometimes difficult- detoxification rules. It's all mercury that makes
you slowly chronical sick etc.; this paper explains and says how to "work'.
A lot of possible supplements you can/have to take. When amalgam is out
"the war" just starts; detoxification is an absolute must !! You have to do it.
It is the most important book I ever read. I still read every week some
lines again; over and over. Because of the internet you can figure out why you
are sick and what you can do about it. The medical world is just looking for symptoms
(big money) and not at the cause. Andy Cutler is different; and brilliant.
He is my hero; thanks god there are people like him in this
very corrupt and sick world.

Simon

1 out of 5 stars must have been written while still mercury toxic   February 24, 2008

While I respect Dr. Cutler's opinion, this book is the most disorganized piece of writing I have ever seen, with many inconsistencies throughout the book. All of the information contained herein can readily be found free of charge, online, and in a much more organized, understandable fashion.

I unfortunately purchased this book a few short years ago and felt it was overpriced at $30.00. Doubling the price of this haphazard, poorly bound book is highway robbery.

5 out of 5 stars an essential book if you have mercury fillings   January 26, 2008

This book has helped me - not only to get rid of some of the fear that was caused by the fillings - but possibly also helped with candida infection, and possibly celiac disease. I'm sure I still have mercury after 3 years of off and on using his protocol - but the amount that is within me is greatly reduced. Maybe only 5-7% is left in me (don't think it will completely be gone as some of it is hard to get at, and some of my teeth probably still have some almalgam residue in them, even after having been filled with plastic).
I wish there was also a book out that look at the chelation of other toxins that are common in our environment - like chlorine, aluminum, rocket fuel, barium, plastic compounds, salt peter, etc... Maybe someone else can write a book as helpful as this one.

If you have ANY illness you need this book. I credit the knowledge of Andy Cutler with saving my life. I was very ill with mercury toxicity and I recovered very quickly without major side effects from using his protocol.

I am a chiropractor with a degree in medical technology. I have used his protocol on patients with success and without the common MAJOR side effects from many other detox protocols.

I also recommend using the yahoogroups message board "autism-mercury" for a layperson's view on his protocol and many, many stories of recovered people.

I would give one caution to this protocol. In my experience with DMSA or lipoic acid as chelators, there are people who won't even tolerate 25mg of a dose to start. Some people have to go as low as 5mg as their starting dose or they will get uncomfortable side effects. You can always start low and go up later. Starting with too high of a dose will slow progress, not speed it up as many people assume.

As a chemical engineer and PhD, Andy Cutler has a unique background that enables him to see the mercury toxicity problem from a truly scientific view and a problem solving perspective.

Engineers and PhDs are problem solvers. Medical clinicians are not. PhDs are scientific. Medical clinicians are dogmatic. The culture of medical clinicians is one that doesn't allow outside the box thinking.

Even "Out of the Box" alternative medical practitioners are way too quick to adopt treatment protocols simply because they heard that another practitioner was doing it that way, ignoring basic scientific principles like how the half life of a chelator in the body will dramatically affect the way it behaves.

I recommend you read this book for a scientists take on a subject that is WAY outside the medical paradigm. The problem of mercury toxicity is real and is reaching epidemic proportions. It isn't going to get any better with the massive promotion of flu shots with 25mcg of mercury per shot and other vaccines, or with the increasing popularity of tattoos with mercury as an ingredient in many of the colors of ink.

Another example of the superior perspective of a scientific view is someone who is able to read and evaluate the data presented in a scientific study rather than just accept the conclusions of the authors in the abstract. Clinicians often rely upon the author's conclusions which often completely contradict the data they present.

The conclusions of authors of studies often parallel the interests of those lining their pockets. If you want examples of blatant discrepancies between data and conclusions read Overdosed America by John Abramson. He gives examples of this in the pharmaceutical company financed research on cholesterol lowering drugs.

In spite of the title of the book, do not make the assumption that if you have few, or no amalgams you can't have mercury toxicity. There are many other sources than amalgams. I'm pretty sure eating fish made me decline more rapidly than having amalgams placed, and I only ate it about once per week. The fact that it was usually tuna steak probably made it worse. The amalgams weren't good either though.

I also highly recommend Dr. Cutler's other book, Hair Test Interpretation: Finding Hidden Toxicities for further information on this subject and other toxic metals.
