1 out of 5 stars I wish I could give it ZERO stars   September 27, 2008
Everyone says that this is an "early work" of Susan Wiggs, and that I should try her latest efforts. I don't think I can stomach it! This was awful. Very sophomoric romance...CONSTANT fighting over stupid misunderstandings...this was just a brutal read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for 1987 original publication   February 27, 2008
I collect authors so for those who have given this book a less than stellar review please take into consideration that the book was originally published in 1987. Why do I collect authors - because I like to see how they have grown as a writer and a person over the years. For 1978, and one of Susan Wigg's earlier efforts this was an excellent book. But it cannot compete with her newest books, especially the Lakeshore Chronicles. Why, because Susan has grown as a writer and a person, and the industry norms have changed a bit. At the time "Texas Wildflower" was written it was very new to have a young woman become something other than a simpering damsel in distress, today we expect gritty, tough heroines who make us believe we can do anything. For those of you who choose this book to become acquainted with Susan Wiggs you should really check out the Lakeside Chronicles. But if you want to read Susan Wiggs' early work by all means read this one and her other great books from the 80'. What is fun is to start with the earliest books she wrote then come forward until now and experience her growth as a writer and person as I have.

I LOVED THIS BOOK UP TO THE VERY END. THE ENDING WAS AWFUL I JUST WANTED TO CRY. IT WAS LIKE WATCHING A MOVIE AND THE POWER GOES OFF NEVER COMES BACK ON. WHERE IS THE LOVE? WHERE IS THE MEETING BETWEEN FATHER AND SON? WHERE IS MY HAPPILY EVER AFTER? PLEASE PLEASE WRITE A NEW ENDING.

1 out of 5 stars Less than spectacular   June 30, 2003

I've been plowing my way through my library's collection of SW's books and I've enjoyed them all so far - except this one. Emotions were mentioned, but not explored. Some of the writing was repetitive and irritating. The whole thing was just not that great. It had the potential to be outstanding though, had she spent the time then that she does now on character and plot development.

1 out of 5 stars Worst book I've read in years   April 30, 2003

I bought this book after someone recommended Susan Wiggs and I have to say, this title was the worst thing I have read in recent memory. Stupid characters, with every cliche in the book, and ridiculous squabbles and jealousy. Not worth your time or money.
