Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Nationally syndicated radio host and bestselling author Thom Hartmann exposes the covert war conservatives, and corporations are waging against America's middle class?a war that's reducing the rest of us to a politically impotent working poor. This book asks: How did this happen? Who's benefiting? And how can we stop it?

5 out of 5 stars great book.... a must read   June 29, 2008
This book was a real eye opener. Its a call to arms to take back our country.

5 out of 5 stars Brain Food   June 23, 2008

Thom Hartmann is by far the smartest and most dead-on of all the liberal talk rado hosts that I have heard and this is the first book of his that I have read. The book goes back historically to help the reader understand where the country started to go wrong as it deviated from the constitution and the true vision of the founding fathers and started to cater to big business/corporations. If you want the facts layed out quickly and in layman's terms, this book is perfect. Hartmann makes the case that true democracy cannot sustain without a solid middle class and that since the 1970's the middle class is steadily shrinking and is being targeted by the right-wing.

Thom Hartmann is the smartest person in the media today --- maybe in the world! He brings his vast knowledge of history to every book he writes so that the reader knows the subject from its very beginning --- how and why we got to where we are. But he doesn't stop with that. He offers positive solutions for the mess that we're in today. I highly recommend this book, and I recommend listening to Thom on various progressive radio channels. It's a valuable lesson every day.

5 out of 5 stars Pass it Around!!   April 19, 2008

If I could afford it, I would buy a thousand copies of this book and hand it out on a street corner. Before giving this book to a coworker, I wrote a paragraph on the inside cover asking the next reader to pass it on to another reader who would again pass it on.
If enough people read this book, we will understand what is at stake in this coming election. It is no less than life or death for our democracy.
Most of us will not make the cut for the elite "ruling class" in the world ahead! If we do not reclaim our nation and clean up the incredible political and economic legacy of the past 30 years of CONservative, theocratic, corporatocracy that has held us hostage since the CON-artist, Ronald Reagan. Back in the 1960's my mother wore a pin that read "Don't Blame Me, I Voted For Brown (Gov. Edmund G. Brown).
We have since, watched our nation and our Constitution be chipped away, bit by bit, by the elitist right wing neoCONs, The fanatical Christian CONservatives and the global CONservative world of the "Corporatocracy".
Thomm Hartmann has done a tremendous public service with this book. If the middle class does not stand up for itself and take this country back, we will cease to exist. It is that simple.
I believe every voter should read this book before going to the polls or dropping that absentee ballot in the mail. By the way, insist on a paper ballot!!

5 out of 5 stars A very good history of the middle class.   April 14, 2008

Very enjoyable read. I especially liked going through the history of the middle class and understanding what policies made the USA a great country that truly valued its middle class. The author also goes through the policies that were implemented over the last 25 years that have turned the middle class into a struggling class. He clearly describes why trickle down economy does not work (it's a myth) and what is the true intent of the republican party (as oppose to the propaganda).
