Product Description Co-written by one of the country's most prominent internists, Dr. Henry "Harry" Lodge, and his star patient, the 73-year-old Chris Crowley, Younger Next Year for Women is a book of hope, a guide to aging without fear or anxiety. This is a book of hope, a guide to aging without fear or anxiety. Using the same inspired structure of alternating voices, Chris and Harry have recast material specifically for women, who already live longer and take better care of themselves than men. New material covers menopause and post-menopause, as well as cardiac disease, osteoporosis, sexuality, and more. This is the book that can show us how to turn back our biological clocks—how to put off 70% of the normal problems of aging (weakness, sore joints, bad balance) and eliminate 50% of serious illness and injury. The key to the program is found in Harry's Rules: Exercise six days a week. Don't eat crap. Connect and commit to others. There are seven rules all together, based on the latest findings in cell physiology, evolutionary biology, anthropology, and experimental psychology. Dr. Lodge explains how and why they work—and Chris Crowley, who is living proof of their effectiveness (skiing better today, for example, than he did twenty years ago), gives the just-as-essential motivation. Both men and women can become functionally younger every year for the next five to ten years, then continue to live with newfound vitality and pleasure deep into our 80s and beyond.

Same as the other book. July 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read the first book written by the 2 authors and hoped the edition for women would be full of information that would be useful to me as a woman. It was mostly a rewrite of their first book. There was nothing in it that I didn't already know. The only positive thing I can remark upon is that it had a pretty pink cover. If you already have "Younger Next Year", don't bother purchasing this one. You will experience deja vu.
Finally Sinking In June 14, 2008 I have never written a review on any book or product, but this book motivated me to go ahead and share my opinion.
I just had my 39th birthday and have spent the last year on a quest to improve myself. I have read countless health/fitness books and subscribe to 6 different health/light cooking magazines. I am 40 pounds overweight and have spent far more time investigating a quick fix to my problem than actually working on it! Despite being fully armed with more health and exercise knowledge than anyone I know... I just could not bring myself to apply any of it! For whatever reason, this book finally hit home. I have been getting out of bed everyday and exercising for the past 5 days without complaint. This is an absolute first for me... I am not a morning person! I met with a personal trainer this week and will be starting on a weight lifing program. I am excitedly looking online at opportunities for fitness vacations and am considering a rowing trip for my 40th! I am grateful for having found this book in my late 30's... this book is not just for those who are 50 or 60!
Save Your Money! June 3, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was so disappointed with this book. Eat right, Exercise, rid yourself of relationships that drain you and make you unhappy, Exercise, create a supportive network of friends, Exercise, stay involved in activities. There I just told you what the entire book said, so save your money. I thought this book had a slightly sexist tone to it because it seemed that women were more defined by their relationships to others especially a spouse. A woman is not defined by who she marries, if she even chooses to marry, or by whether or not she has children. It seemed at times that the author was telling a woman to make sure her spouse was well taken care of so that she could take care of herself too. This book offered no new insights. Younger Next Year May 25, 2008 This is an incredible Book; purchased 3 initially and 3 more as gifts for friends....would highly recommend this for everyone; there is a man's version which was the first book written.
Don't shoot the messenger May 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My wife and I have believed for some time that exercise and diet are critical to good health. These books and audio-books kick started us toward a healthier retirement.
Written by an MD and his patient, the books offer Dr. Harry's scientific rationale for the proposed lifestyle without being too technical. The patient, Chris, comes off as a bit insensitive, elitist and chauvinistic, but his messages are worthwhile as he tells how he and others have turned their lives around with Dr. Harry's advice.
If you don't believe in evolution, you probably shouldn't buy these books. Much of the science is based on Darwin. If mild profanity or sarcasm offends you, you may have a hard time with Chris. Those looking for a magic solution to better health won't find it in these books. The books supply the logic, the work is up to the reader. People already leading a healthy lifestyle probably won't learn too much.
I've listened to both audio-books. I bought into the exercise early on and listen to the audios as I walk or bike. The men's is abridged and 7-1/2 hours, while the women's is unabridged and twice as long. I recommend listening to the men's audio and buying the women's book to flesh out certain points or concepts. The person reading Chris's part on the men's is easier to take than on the women's.
I've read many of the reader's reviews and find the negative ones fall into four groups. Some were looking for an easy solution and don't want to do the work the book suggests. Others were already leading healthy lifestyles or believe they are and didn't find anything revolutionary in the books. The third group was offended by Chris for a variety of reasons and refused to listen to his messages. The last group felt there should have been specific exercise recommendations. One of the points made by the book was that we need to vary our exercise in order to keep up interest and including all the possibilities would have made a very long book.
