Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
John, Wayne, and Duke are Belgian Draft horses that work together to draw a wagon on Mackinac Island, Michigan. They are always hitched in the same order. The horses are so used to being together, they walk around in the same order even when theyre not working: John on the left, Wayne in the middle, and Duke on the right. One day a new stable boy teams them up differently, and things go haywire in this fun picture book for young readers.

A visit to Mackinac Island is like stepping into the Victorian era, when the island was a popular vacation destination. Still a popular destination with todays tourists, automobiles are not allowed on the island, so all transportation is by bicycle, foot, or the popular horse-drawn buggy.

Today, the state park at Mackinac Island is, according to National Geographic magazine, one of the ten best state parks in the country. The buggy rides with horses like John, Wayne, and Duke remain popular and are the basis for this story.

2 out of 5 stars Fair children's book   September 27, 2007
This is definately not the best children's book about Mackinac Island. The story is lacking and uneventful, and the illustrations are bland water color pictures. My children are preschoolers and have been to the Island often, but we much prefer "Mac's Mackinac Island Adventure".

4 out of 5 stars Cool picture book about Mackinac   December 12, 2005
I just visited Mackinac Island over the summer and got to take a horse and buggy tour. Everything in the book is right on - our tour guide talked about the hitching order of the horses and how the horses stand in the same order even when they're not hitched together (like when they're out in the pasture). The only drawback to this book is that I don't know if people who aren't from Michigan or haven't been to Mackinac Island would be very interested in this story. But I am from MI and have been to Mackinac a few times, so I think this book is great.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific story!   June 5, 2005
This book has a great appeal to toddlers and older kids who -- like the horses John, Wayne, and Duke -- have a strong attachment to order and routine. Cathe Hahn's trip around Mackinac Island is both lively and informative. The pictures are delightful, too. This would make a great souvenir or preparation for a trip to Mackinac, but you don't need to have any connection to the place to enjoy this book. And I imagine there will be several kids asking to go to the Island as a result of this happy, lovely text.

3 out of 5 stars Gay Horsey Story   April 28, 2005

My heart and spirit soared with Island breezes as I read this delightful tale. Oh how grand, how succinct and well stated. Any child will surely benefit from reading this story of Three Gay Horses. The three horses go three by three everywhere about and around the island-by three. I can count to three now. A wonderful tail, highly recomended for three year olds!
