Product Description A fabulous lost Amazon city once inhabited by women warriors and containing a rare red diamond: it sounded like myth, but archeologist Jillian Sherwood believed it was real, and she was willing to put up with anything to find it -- even Ben Lewis. Ruffian, knock-about, and number one river guide in Brazil, Ben was all man -- over six feet of rock-hard muscles that rippled under his khakis, with lazy blue eyes that taunted her from his tanned face. Jillian watched him come to a fast boil when she refused to reveal their exact destination upriver in the uncharted rain forests -- and resolved to stand her ground. Neither of them could foresee what the days ahead promised: an odyssey into the fiery heart of passion and betrayal, and a danger that would force them to cast their fates together, immersed in the eternal, unsolved mysteries of love....

This book reminded me of Romancing The Stone. You know that movie with that ancient guy, Michael Douglas? I liked Kathleen Turner a lot in that movie, but I digress. This book in a nutshell:
Protagonist: Jillian, doted daughter of esteemed archaeologist who loses credibility chasing a myth and dies because of it. Dad dies and only family left is the half-brother who has issues because he thinks Dad loved her more. Brother grows up into an adult loser. She follows dad's footsteps and becomes really good at her job, but never gets to do anything really cool because her dad was a crackpot. She decides to clear his name and make a name for herself. She meets a hot guy. Loser brother comes along and includes some shady people. Shady people want to steal treasure. Drama ensues. Half-brother sacrifices himself for sister, dies. Treasure is found. She clears dad's name. Makes a name for herself. Guy gets girl. The end.

Exciting short read July 8, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an excellent short read. I will read more of her books! This isn't just your run of the mill romance novel. It has an exciting trip up the Amazon to find a lost city, where the Amazons supposedly lived. There is plenty of romance included, though. Linda Howard has a little different twist to romance that was refreshing. I would recommend it to anyone who loves romance and mystery!
What a surprise! October 4, 2005 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book was a surprise for me,I have almost every book that Linda Howard has written, but I always had second thoughts about buying this one, and when finally I bought it I really liked it.The story was great and the main characters had strong personalities just how I like them.I liked Jillian's character the best. She was smart, tough and she didn't trust eassily.Ben was really a law unto himself, but underneath it all a true gentleman that would give his life to save the woman he loves. It shows that the author loves the setting of the story and even though I haven't been to the amazon I could imagine being there.I loved this book it's a great read, I highly recommend it.
Romancing the Stone meets Indiana Jones May 12, 2005 33 out of 33 found this review helpful
In an effort to reestablish her deceased father's reputation, archeologist Jillian Sherwood and her half-brother get financial backing from a shady character to search for a lost civilization buried deep in the Amazon and falls for her American ex-pat river guide, Ben Lewis. Of course, it's hate at first sight for both of them. Overly macho Ben doesn't want to take a woman into unchartered territory, but on the other hand, he doesn't trust the locals to not harm her either, so he reluctantly agrees, and makes several attempts at wooing her. Jillian is no shrinking violet, and she can more than hold her own on the expedition, especially since she is the only one who can read the map.
Jillian and Ben has so much chemistry oozing off the pages, and their romance really sizzles. This is one of Linda Howard's better pairings, as the hero and the heroine are definitely equals (and can banter better than most duos). It's a great adventure ride with lots of twists and turns and plenty of romance.
