Amazon.com Review
Linda Howard's romantic suspense Kill and Tell supplies readers with plenty of thrills and chills. As a nurse, Karen Whitlaw has seen more than the average person, but even she isn't prepared to identify the body of the father she hasn't seen since she was 13. The local detective on the case, Marc Chastain, informs Karen that her father, who was homeless, has been murdered. Still grief stricken over the recent death of her mother, Karen isn't prepared to examine her feelings about her father and his absence from her life. She is willing to accept that he was the victim of street crime until her home is burglarized and she becomes the target for some frightening "accidents." Whoever killed her father is after her, and the only hope she has for discovering why must lie in the notebook that Karen's father mailed to her mother shortly before his death.

Product Description
Some secrets need to be told...

Still reeling from her mother's recent death, Karen Whitlaw is stunned when she receives a package containing a mysterious notebook from her estranged father, whom she has barely seen since his return from the Vietnam War decades ago. Then, a shocking phone call: Karen's father has been murdered on the gritty streets of New Orleans.

Even if they lead to murder....

For homicide detective Marc Chastain, something about the case of a murdered homeless man just doesn't add up -- especially after he meets the victim's daughter. Far from the cold woman he expected, Karen Whitlaw is warm and passionate. She is also in serious danger. A string of "accidents" have shaken Karen to the core, and forced her into the protective embrace of the charming detective she vowed to resist. Together they unravel a disturbing storyof politics, power, and murder -- and face a killer who will stop at nothing to get his hands on her father's secrets.

3 out of 5 stars Dangerous liaisons in New Orleans   July 28, 2008
Karen Whitlaw was abandoned by her father when young, and her mother died recently. When she receives a mysterious box of papers from her father, she packs them away and forgets about them. However her father had given her evidence of a murder and now those who paid for the killing want the evidence back. When her father is killed in New Orleans, detective Marc Chastain gets the case. He gets in contact with Karen who flies down to claim the body and gets Marc's as well!

There is one mega hot love scene in this book, but other than that there are so many implausibilities that neither the mystery nor the romance hold up all that well. That Karen and Marc should fall in love and commitment so quickly beggars belief, and the character of the villain is both predictable and not very interesting. This is a reread for me, but not a keeper. I bought this book on impulse and I'll pass it on, but it held your attention while you were there. B-

3 out of 5 stars Not one of Howard's best, but not bad overall   June 25, 2008

Karen Whitlaw is still recovering from her mother's death when she receives a mysterious package in the mail from her estranged father. A former Marine sniper, Dexter Whitlaw abandoned his wife and child after leaving the service, only to surface occasionally with his sexual and monetary needs. Karen has never felt close to her father, and when she receives word that he's been murdered in a street crime in Louisiana, her surprise momentarily outweighs her grief. Still, she answers the summons to come to New Orleans and identify her father's body, and finds herself immersed in intrigue because of it.

Marc Chastain is a homicide detective in the New Orleans PD. He's seen his share of brutal murders, but he can't stand to see senseless death. When he is assigned Dexter Whitlaw's case, he automatically assumes that this is a man who was abandoned by his family, and his first instinct is to dislike Dexter's offspring. But when Karen shows up in his office, Marc discredits his original belief and realizes that everything might not be as it seems. And when Karen is threatened by people after her father's legacy, Marc is quick to step in and protect his woman.

Kill and Tell is by far not one of Linda Howard's best. I'm a new Howard convert, but even I can tell that this is a rudimentary effort at best. The characters, while fully drawn, aren't engaging, and it's hard to make yourself care whether they live or die. I liked Karen. I empathized with her. But I couldn't bring myself to be upset over her losses, and was only briefly concerned with whether or not she and Marc would wind up together. This isn't usually the case for me and a Howard novel. I freakin' LOVED Cry No More. I'm not really into romantic suspense, but that is a novel I'd recommend to a friend. This was a lackluster effort in comparison. And while I liked Marc, I wasn't enthralled by him. I wasn't worried that I'd never meet a man who loved me half as much as he loved Karen, which is how I know when I've read a good romance novel. This just seemed a bit quick to me. These two fell in bed (and in love) too quickly. There wasn't any tension. Any hoping that they'd wind up together. Any waiting for them to realize they loved each other. It was just a little too easy. I still love Howard. I'll still read more of her novels. But this one gets a C from me, from a normally B+ or better author.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent 'why are people trying to kill me' mystery.   June 20, 2008
I understood how Karen Whitlaw was feeling. While never been in a situation like that, it was close. To lose someone so close to you so quickly, then to lose someone who is supposed to be close to you soon afterwards would have anyone feeling as she felt. A brave woman, she uses her head, her instincts, and her fight for survival to get herself out of whatever situation she finds herself in.

Marc Chastain is one hell of a detective. It's very rare to read about a detective that uses and trusts his intincts so implicitly in everything he does, from interviewing a victim, a witness, to questioning a perp. I love his smooth charm, and the way his inner self becomes so primitive in protecting Karen. While I think the `I love you's came out a little fast, they knew they were perfect for each other really quickly. And the reader knows it - they balance each other beautifully.

The plot could maybe have been a little more inventive, but I liked it. While the reader knows what's what and who's who, the characters in the book don't and they fight for their lives while trying to figure it out. The action scenes are great, especially with Karen. I thing the love scenes were great in their basicness - primitive and no fanfare - completely raw. The suspense is eased a little since the reader knows what's going on, but it in no way takes away from the story.

Excellent! Now I need to get my hands on All The Queen's Men!

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent romantic suspense novel.   January 4, 2008

It was a good thriller, interesting characters, good relationships, good plot and action. Definitely worth reading. Dexter was a Vietnam Vet who abandoned his wife and daughter after that war. He was killed. His daughter, Karen, went to New Orleans to identify and bury him. She met Marc, a detective and a romance began. The killer then started going after Karen. John Medina has a small but important part in this book. He is the main character in the next book: "All The Queen's Men." Sexual content: moderate. Setting: current day Columbus, Ohio and New Orleans. Copyright: 1998. Genre: contemporary romantic suspense.

5 out of 5 stars She does it again!!   December 18, 2007
Lina Howard is great. I love reading her books and being taken out of the present and getting lost in another world. Each of her books are interesting and romantic. Who could ask for more?
