Product Description I hope this book gets into many hands. I really believe it will save some lives. Surely it will result in cruising sailors going through gales at sea in a lot more comfort and with a lot more confidence. (Roger C Taylor, Author, Elements of Seamanship, 1995) Whether you have an offshore cruiser or an inshore day boat, this is a volume that makes compulsive and compulsory reading. One day it might even save your vessel or your life. (Paul Gelder, Yachting Monthly, 1996) Covers storm management on small and large boats, boats of traditional and modern design. Storm Tactics was just what I needed. (Pat Henry, SAIL Magazine, 1996) Proper storm management is not just sending maydays. How many voyagers can really heave-to, set a sea anchor, or set storm sails? The Pardeys tell you how and why to do it. (John Kettlewell, Ocean Navigator, 1996) .....will cause you to think in a more positive way about dealing with heavy weather, consequently increasing your confidence. (W M Nixon, Yachting World, 1997) What the Pardeys have to say on the art of storm survival will no doubt stimulate much-needed debate. What they succeed in serving up is an outstanding five-course meal for the brain. (Don Long, 48 Degrees North, 1996) Definitely worth a read - none of us wants to get caught out in storm conditions, but it can only help to have other peoples experiences to fall back on when it finally does happen. (Editor, The Shetland Times, 1996) What the Pardeys commend is supported by extensive evidence from their own and others experiences. The result is indeed a handbook of storm tactics which is likely to become a classic contribution to seagoing safety. (Denny M. Desoutter, Practical Boat Owner, 1996) We all hope never to meet that ultimate storm, but if we sail long enough offshore we probably will. Read Storm Tactics Handbook first. (Anne Hammick, Ocean Cruising Club, England, 1996) Should be compulsory reading for all who venture offshore. Buy it, read it, use it. (George Taylor, Editor, Practical Boat Owner, 1996)

I had the first, the second is worth having too April 8, 2008 My first copy was pretty worn, so I decided to buy this edition. Really interesting new stories, not only from the Pardeys expereinces in storms, but also from others. I liked the deductions made by folks from both ends of the experience spectrum, one a real novice, others all along the expereince wave, they all add to the information Lin and Larry share in a very understandable manner. I still think this book is really important. And this edition is definitely easier to navigate. I have the Storm tactics DVD and like it. The two work well together.
Convincing November 24, 2007 The authors give their opinion. It can be discussed but they support it by many examples. I was convinced by the interest of heaving to in bad weather or just to wait and rest at sea. Now, I am buying a parachute anchor...
Must read for all off-shore sailors November 24, 2007 In my humble opinion this is the Pardey's best book to date. The techniques they present are life savers have no doubt. M. Bertsche
best I've read August 30, 2007 My wife and I spent four years living on our sailboat (55ft) voyaging from Calif. to the east coast and read every book I could find on heavy weather sailing. About half-way through I came across Pardey's book. I think it's far and away the best volume out there on the subject. Even if you pass on the parachute angle and just plan on heaving-to in a tough situation. Should be in every crusing boat's library, and read and implemented by the skipper.
Heaving to techniques from cover to cover April 10, 2007 After reading this book you will know a lot of theory about when and how to heave to. Diagrams and well-written explanations describe methods and techniques of survival during a storm at sea. Also consider "Heavy Weather Sailing" (revised edition) as an excellent source of information on storm tactics and heavy weather sailing. It describes the yacht's stability in more detail.
