Product Description
The gentlemen of the Bastion Club have proven their courage while fighting England's enemies, but nothing has prepared them for dealing with that most formidable of challenges: the opposite sex. Deverell, Viscount Paignton, needs a wife and believes he's discovered her—not swanning about like a typical debutante, but in the library with her nose buried in a book! Phoebe Malleson is tempted to distraction by Deverell, yet marrying him isn't part of her plan. But telling him to go away doesn't work . . . and he quickly learns of the secret she's been trying to hide. Someone powerful has her pet cause targeted for destruction—and now she must accept Deverell's help . . . though the cost to them both might be dear—and deadly.

Deverell and Phoebe-SPOILERS April 18, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Favorite scene with Phoebe- Doing some damage to the evil dude who kidnapped her.
Favorite scene with Deverell- Teaching Phoebe how to defend herself.
Together- Their first meeting.
What did you like about Phoebe- Her love for her work. She wanted to help those in need. Her independence. She was a bit of a loner. She preferred books to parties.
What didn't you like about Phoebe- Letting what happened to her control her life, keep her from love, marriage, happiness...
What did you like about Deverell- He treated Phoebe like an equal. A partner. He protected her, and helped her. I liked his story games. HOT!!!! :) He wanted to help her and everyone with the agency. He wasn't afraid to ask his aunt for helping in finding a wife.
What didn't you like about Deverell- When Phoebe was explaining what had happened to her, why she distrusted men, all he cared about was having sex with her. I hated him for that.
Casting Phoebe, I'd cast Reese Witherspoon. Casting Deverell, I'd cast David Sutcliffe.
Not as good as Beyond Seduction... February 4, 2008 Bought this after reading Beyond Seduction, which I enjoyed reading. However, although I enjoyed the story, felt it didn't live up to what SL is capable of. It was an OK read. Am looking forward to the next Bastion Club book, and of course, that of Dalziel....
More apt title: The Sexual Escapades of Phoebe and Deverell January 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've read a few of Lauren's books in the past. Though certainly the sensuality level of her books is higher than those that I typically read, without a good plot and flat characters, the physical relationship isn't enough to hold the reader through a book.
The main component that ties the story together is the sex. There's so much sex in this book that the title should have been "The Sexual Escapades of Phoebe and Deverell. I don't have a problem with a sensual book, but because the characters were not very appealing, I found all the sex to simply be a distraction. If I at least had the feeling that Phoebe and Deverell cared about each other, besides the amazing sex, I would have been more convinced.
I'll be hoping for better next time.
An amazing discovery December 2, 2007 I was searching for something to read and even if I Stephanie Laurens is not my favorite author I picked up this title and wow, I'm so happy I discovered this book!!
This is a really great story, I don't know if my feeling come from the fact that this is my first complete Stephanie Laurens book, since I have read only some of her short stories but I truly enjoyed the characters, the interaction and the complete plot of this novel.
If you are looking for something fun, romantic, sexy and mysterious you have found the right book, I can't wait to get my hands in the rest of the Bastion Series. Be well and take care.
Hot romantic erotica with a likable, sexy pair of lovers November 24, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I honestly like almost everything Stephanie Laurens has written. Obviously some readers have gotten a wee bit tired of her standard formula, but if you're after hot and sexy historical *escapist* romances, she does a consistently better job than almost every other writer out there. She's writing for a 21st century audience, who likes hunky alpha males and intelligent, spirited heroines who aren't willing to settle for some ordinary, boring gentleman. There's been some surprising grumblings in the reviews here, so please note that the point of these novels is romantic erotica, not historical accuracy. The only historical romance author I've read who has handled realities such as contraception well is Robin Schoen, and her novels are a lot darker.
The romance, the overall story and the writing here was good enough that I've read this book twice. Our hero may have initiated their relationship (doh! Isn't that what alpha males are supposed to do?), but, despite her initial reservations, she was a full, willing and intrigued participant, and well able to keep him from riding roughshod over her despite his "possessive, obsessive" tendencies and nearly overwhelming maleness. I also liked that he admired her for what she was doing to rescue women, and that he helped her rather than just take over. Overall, this is an excellent addition to the enjoyable Bastion series - all of which I recommend! And I can't wait to find out what kind of heroine captures the elusive Dalziel - so keep'um coming!
