Product Description Combining southern warmth with unabashed emotion and side-splitting hilarity, Fannie Flagg takes readers back to Elmwood Springs, Missouri, where the most unlikely and surprising experiences of a high-spirited octogenarian inspire a town to ponder the age-old question: Why are we here?
Life is the strangest thing. One minute, Mrs. Elner Shimfissle is up in her tree, picking figs, and the next thing she knows, she is off on an adventure she never dreamed of, running into people she never in a million years expected to meet. Meanwhile, back home, Elner’s nervous, high-strung niece Norma faints and winds up in bed with a cold rag on her head; Elner’s neighbor Verbena rushes immediately to the Bible; her truck driver friend, Luther Griggs, runs his eighteen-wheeler into a ditch–and the entire town is thrown for a loop and left wondering, “What is life all about, anyway?” Except for Tot Whooten, who owns Tot’s Tell It Like It Is Beauty Shop. Her main concern is that the end of the world might come before she can collect her social security.
In this comedy-mystery, those near and dear to Elner discover something wonderful: Heaven is actually right here, right now, with people you love, neighbors you help, friendships you keep. Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven is proof once more that Fannie Flagg “was put on this earth to write” (Southern Living), spinning tales as sweet and refreshing as iced tea on a summer day, with a little extra kick thrown in.

I enjoyed this book so much this purchase is for a birthday gift May 2, 2008 Can't Wait to Get to Heaven: A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle) I read the other reviews after reading this book when it first hit the shelves. The bad reviews are those who want substance and deep literary content. I dont care about all that I like this book because it left me with smiles and was easy enough to read i could pick it up and read a chapter and put it down and feel like i had a few moments of peace. It never left me feeling hanging to finish chapters and then being lost with out going back to find the whole story of events. It left me feeling good about people even though they may have their "moments"It was a laugh out loud book. The book didnt take it self so seriously and that was what i wanted. I hated to see it end. like a good comedy movie that doesnt leave you sitting on the edge of your seat but full of spunk and good nature and you walk away feeling happy-this is what this book is to me. REal people real life and finding the good in all. One of the few books I will give to a friend because i want them to share a smile.
Can't Wait to Get to Heaven May 2, 2008 I don't believe Fanny Flagg can write a "bad" book. Even the twist near the end of this one added to it's delight.
Sometimes you just need to have a little fun April 22, 2008 And that's what this book was for me. It was a sweet look at an elderly lady and her influence in life and death. There were moments when I laughed out loud, and other moments when it was just plain sappy, but in a fun kick-up-your-feet-and-just-enjoy-the-ride kind of way.

I was going to give this book a four as I was initially turned off by some of the cutsie writing. The quirky names were a little too quirky. The handling of the heavenly visit was a little too odd. But then I asked what kind of book deserved a five? Is it a book you want to read straight through cover to cover? Is it a book that leaves you feeling good? Is it a book that leaves the reader with some resolve to live life more fully? Is it a book that sometimes makes the reader misty? If so, then this book has it. I said to myself, "Put down the highbrow attitude and just relish in the fun." And this really is a fun book. Curl up with it and just let it happen. The chapters are very short and the pace keeps on going. Best of all, old Aunt Elner reminded me so of my own grandmother that I want my kids to read it so they might know a little bit about her. All the other characters were also a pretty good representation of someone I have known. Fannie Flagg is an American treasure. But now I have to go as it has been some time since I read "Welcome to the World Baby Girl" and I'm fixin' to reread it.

I always like Fannie Flagg's books. Especially since she continues with some of the same characters. This book is good reading and I enjoyed it. Can't wait for another Fannie book.
