Product Description
Sometimes the gravest dangers -- and the darkest souls -- live right beside us.... In the span of twenty-four hours, every-thing Laurel Shields believes about her life and her marriage to a prominent doctor will be shattered -- if she survives a terrifying ordeal. The day begins with the jarring discovery that, soon after ending an affair, Laurel is pregnant. But when she returns home to find her husband ashen, unkempt, and on the brink of violence, a nightmare quickly unfolds. In the heart of an idyllic Mississippi town, behind the walls of her perfect house, Laurel finds herself locked in a volatile standoff with a husband she barely recognizes. Confronted with evidence of her betrayal, she must tread a deadly path between truth and deception while a ring of armed police prepares a dangerous rescue. But Laurel's greatest fear -- and her only hope -- lies with her former lover, a brave man whom fate has granted the power to save both Laurel and her children -- if she can protect his identity long enough....

Disappointing October 3, 2008 I found myself totally rooting against the "heroine" of this novel. Laurel was a totally, self-absorbed, remorseless hypocrite. I have read every Gregg Iles book I can get my hands on and this is the first one that was totally disappointing.
Too Shallow, Too Slow Starting September 17, 2008 I've not read a lot of Isles books but this one was a bit slow. It was a struggle to keep plodding through the books during parts, especially the beginning. Once the story is rolling it's tolerable, but not great.
Not Up To His Usual Standard September 6, 2008 I am a gan of this writer and have read many of his previous works and, with rather high expectations, I began this work. It missed the mark on many levels. One of the writers greatest strengths has been in the area of character development as well as in his ability to utilize double as well as triple twists in the telling of his story. The cahracters are somewhat stiff and lack the depth that has become trademark of this writer. The sory is rather predictable and is far from reality. An earlier work by the writer was 24 Hours. It seems as if he has taken this earlier work, which was far superior, and merely updated the story with some minor variations. Iles is known for his ability to write well in various genres. This book misses his previous works badly. It is still a rapid read, if one is able to overlook a work that contains many extraneous sub-plots as well as matters that are unresolved when the novel ends.
Good read... August 25, 2008 I love the writing style of Greg Iles. This book did not disappoint. I had a hard time getting into it at first but once I did I lost a lot of sleep trying to get through it. The ending was a little disappointing but other than that it was a nice ride to get there.
Not up to Greg Iles' standards August 14, 2008 My title should just about say it all. Fans of his other works will note that this is a relatively weak offering. For another author this would be a fairly good work, and I did enjoy it, but it is among Iles' worst offerings so far.
I highly recommend his other works, esp. Mortal Fear, Black Cross, Spandau Phoenix, the Quiet Game, Turning Angel, True Evil, Blood Memory, Sleep No More, pretty much anything by him.
