Fantastic read, I couldn't put it down! June 19, 2008 I found this book at the bottom of a box of books and started it because I had nothing else to read. Page one I was hooked! Very fast read, good twists and turns. Not too much legal mumbo jumbo. Definitely a keeper!
Psychological thriller incorporating a reflection of society June 11, 2008 The King of Lies is John Hart's debut book and reads like writing is old hat for him. The main character, "Work" is a flawed individual who reflects so many societal problems. Ezra Pickens is Work's domineering father who goes missing and eighteen months later his murdered body is found. From that point forward in the book it is a tour de force of reflections of society through the characters while maintaining a fast paced "who done it" story line with a often times disturbing psychological angle.
I am looking forward to reading Mr. Hart's second novel, Down River and believe he may become a writer that people wait anxiously for his next novel every year or so.
A great book for a fun eveing of suspense reading. June 9, 2008 I think most readers that enjoy a good book will have a fine time with this one.
Excellent, engrossing story June 9, 2008 I really liked this book! I read a lot of mysteries and most of them are fairly predictable. This book is not!
John Hart does a great job telling a story that is interesting and engrossing. With an economy of words, he especially does a good job developing characters that you have a real feeling for - whether you like them or not, you get a sense of them in a way that isn't common in mystery stories. Many mysteries work so hard to keep the action moving that they don't develop characters - or the characters are so unreal or superhuman, that you can't relate to them. As a result, the story falls flat cause you don't care about anybody involved.
The opposite is true here - all the characters come to life very vividly. They are all interesting, believable (not always likeable) - and the things they do, you can imagine happening in real life. You can relate to the issues they face, the choices they make, and the twists and turns they go through to work things out.
And the ending is an excellent surprise.
I definitely recommend this book - and I will be reading more John Hart books (this was my first).
King of Lies June 4, 2008 I bought this book on recommendation from Amazon and was very happy with the purchase. I feel John Hart's work compares with Dennis LeShane, whose books I always know I can enjoy. A little bit love story but mostly suspense. Great read!
