2 out of 5 stars Rushed Novel   May 2, 2008

When i got through chapter 1 i knew i wouldnt like this book...and i wasnt disappointed when i finally finshed. I think the story was rushed a bit. I was truly confused why these characters actually liked each other. Their "romance" kind of starts right off the back, not really giving the audience any time at all to get to know these characters at all. There passion for each other made no sense at all because the characters werent developed very well. Also, I think this book is highly predictable. All in all, i would just have to say this book seemed to skip all the alot of the needed attributes to a good romance novel.

5 out of 5 stars Consistent Delivery from Cannon   April 21, 2008

It's really nice to see a new voice in this community deliver not only on her first novel, but on her second novel as well. I could easily become an avid fan of Julie Cannon if she continues to deliver this level of quality writing.

Kyle and Lane are both extremely well-developed characters inside an imaginative and believable storyline that leaves the reader hoping for more. The story is steamy, yet tasteful and keeps the reader engaged from the first page to the last. Here's one vote for a sequel from this talented author.

1 out of 5 stars Heart 2 Heart   April 2, 2008

This was one of those novels I put on the 'for sale' pile next to my desk... I do like trying out writers I haven't yet read and the blurb sounded like something I might like. Tough cop opening up, yadda, yadda, yadda ;-) Been there a million times, but oh, I love tough cop stories.

So we have Kyle, tough cop, on the one hand, who is raising her sister's daughter, trying to combine raising a young child while having a demanding job, trying to cope with her sister's death. On the other hand we have Lane, owner of a restaurant that Kyle likes to have breakfast at. I didn't quite see the attraction between the two, the scenes where they meet and decide to go on a date didn't seem very well crafted to me. Generally, I felt that the characterizations weren't very well done... there was secrecy, hinting at something large and dangerous and potentially hurtful for both of the characters... and here's when the train wreck takes shape... I really, really hoped the writer wouldn't take the very cliched and obvious storyline out that presented itself, but she did.

I wish I had given this one a miss, but oh well. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

5 out of 5 stars Fun fast paced sexy read   February 26, 2008
Gorgeous people, beautiful coastal setting, a couple that is ideally suited for eachother - what is not to like?

I started this book on a flight a couple weeks ago on the way to a getaway vacation in Palm Springs and couldn't be happier that I chose to pack this novel. I finished it after midnight the second day as I had to find out how the author was going to resolve the story.

I am already looking forward to the author's next novel `Heartland' coming out next month.

3 out of 5 stars This book doesn't disappoint, with genuine characters and some unanticipated thrills   January 11, 2008

This book was more than fine (I thought the title was pretty cheesy, but in retrospect ends up suiting), an above average 3 stars. I recognized in it some of the good things I enjoyed in "Come and Get Me." This author has a good grasp of internal character voice. You get drawn in to their emotion and lives. Their actions and conversations are supported by their thoughts.

Overall, this offering was a tad uneven for me. I enjoyed that I didn't see the twist at the end coming, as another review said likely because I was so captivated by the romance between the main characters, but at the same time I was kicking myself that I hadn't even considered it. Still, the ending seemed slightly rushed to me, and the plot a bit choppy. There was so much emotional gold to mine in approximately the last third of the book that it could probably have made an entire book on its own. Instead, while parts were given the proper weighty treatment, while preserving the sweetness of the relationship, I felt lost (not plot-wise, but rather I'd lost connection with the book) more than once.

Still, this is an above-average author. I really like what she does with characterizations. The execution could have been smoother. Some things could have been drawn out more, and others dwelt upon less. Occasionally I wanted to shake the characters and tell them to snap out of it. But if you read this book you will enjoy it. It's got hurt-comfort elements, deals with familial relationships realistically, and involves characters who you like, and who act reasonably based on motivations that are laid out well by the author.
