In an effective refrain, the narrator repeats, "Still, there was the little bowl of milk, just waiting." The winning combination here is the simplicity and humor of the story, paired with gorgeous black-and-white illustrations with thick black lines (mirrored by the thick bold sans-serif font) and shades of grey that are as luminous as a moonlit night should be. Full-moon circles and ovals appear throughout the design: white circle full moons on the endpapers, elliptical flowers by the porch, white circles of firefly light, oval pads on Kitten's paws, and her big round eyes (especially when surprised and soaking wet). This is a fun book about a kitten that is not very smart. In the book Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes, Kitten sees her first full moon and thinks it is a bowl of milk. She really wants it, so she tries to get it in many different ways.
At first, Kitten is sitting on the porch and sees the full moon, which she thinks is a big bowl of milk. She wants "the bowl of milk" and starts trying to get it in many different ways. First, she tries licking it, but she only gets a bug. Yuck!!!! Then, she tries to get it by jumping, but tumbles down the porch stairs, bumping her legs, nose, ears, head, and tail on the way down. Second, she tries chasing it over the sidewalk, in the field, and in the garden by the pond. Third, she tries to get it by climbing up a tree, but does not succeed.
From the top of the tree, Kitten sees a big bowl of milk in the middle of the lake (actually, the moon's reflection). Then she jumps in to try and get it, but all that happens is she gets wet. When she went home it was to find a real bowl of milk waiting for her on the porch. YAY!
I enjoyed this book because the pictures were beautiful and the words were small. The pictures were detailed and fit in with the story. I also liked the pictures because they were black and white. The text was great because it was not too much to read. I also enjoyed how naive the kitten was because she thought the moon was a bowl of milk. I would recommend this book to younger people who like pictures more than letters!!!!!

This is the best book in the history of books!!! The first time I read it, I started reading it to my 3-year-old brother Diego who kept yelling,"Marshmallow" in the middle of the story! I know everyone will love it as much as I do. That's why I give it 5 stars. I am going to read it again right now.
What every Children's book Should Strive to Be February 29, 2008
This book truly has it all! The story takes place at night and goes through a shimmering array of charcoal looking style illustrations that seem to perfectly showcase kitten during his journey of discovery without detracting from the simplicity and sheer determination of a naive baby kitten. You can't help but laugh even as an adult at the adventures this poor, tiny kitten has in his quest for the irresistible bowl of milk (I mean of course kitten thinks the moon is a bowl of milk its her first moon and shes clearly not properly informed about the moon and how it glistens in the sky and obviously beckons to her "come drink me"). She runs, she climbs, she leaps, and even ends up soaking wet in what she thinks is another bowl of milk only to find that in the end everything she wants is waiting for her right on her very own doorstep. I love reading this to my daughter I never get sick of it, this book will absolutely stand the test of time! In fact I was so smitten with this book I've gone on to buy at least five other Kevin Henkes books for my daughter who ironically has a floral name as does most of Henke's mouse characters and their all as equally fantastic as kitten, but in my opinion for a reader with a bigger attention span 2 and a half+. I actually think "Kittens first full moon" would be absolutely amazing as a board book and so I recommend it from birth+.

Hi, my name is Sierra and I am 6 years old.
The Arthur of my book kitten's first full moon is Kevin Haneks. The part I like best is the kitten's wish comes true. This is how the story goes, kitten saw a little bowl of milk in the sky and she wanted it. Kitten sprang from the porch with all her might, only to end up pinching her tail, banging her head, and tumbling all the way down the stairs. This began her adventure and in the end Kitten was awarded with a little bowl of milk for herself.
This is a AWESOME book and I would recommend this to everyone.

Very sweet and silly January 10, 2008
This book is so sweet, and the predicaments that Kitten gets into are silly indeed. This book is a great gift for a toddler, especially when paired with a small stuffed kitten to cuddle while reading at bedtime.
