The Lucky Place May 1, 2008 This is an amazing first book by this author. It takes your heart right from the beginning but has a fresh way of looking at life through the eyes and mind of a young girl. By the end you are entrenched in the girl's life and rooting for her all along the way. Bravo!

Cassie's dilemma, voice and her take on her world are compelling. And the way Vincent allows Cassie's voice to mature throughout the story is remarkable. So much of Vincent's prose reads like poetry that I kept wanting to grab a pencil and mark passages, but didn't want to lose momentum. Even after I started reading, I had the realization that the book itself and the story sort of snuck up on me--so unassuming but so quietly confident in its own strength. Breathtaking and genuine and real. I'm eager to pass it on to friends.

Zu Vincent is an incredibly sensitive and polished writer. She has quite a following in California, because of her short stories and magazine fiction. Now the rest of the country can see why. Her characters and relationships are a thing of beauty. This small gem of a novel is a moving and eventful journey.
A Great Read March 24, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Zu Vincent's THE LUCKY PLACE is a rich and poignant story. Vincent's character's are fully three dimensional and her scenes are so evocative you can smell the pine when the family takes a trip to the woods. Set in the sixties, THE LUCKY PLACE tells the story of Cassie who grows up struggling with how to love two dads. Her biological father is loving but unable to care for his family, and her step-dad is her hero, but in loving him she feels she is betraying her first dad. The story is well paced, each vignette adding another piece towards a satisfying and moving conclusion. Cassie's story is beautifully told and brought tears to my eyes more than once. THE LUCKY PLACE is a terrific story and I highly recommend it.
