made my own wedding cake! 2 of them even! September 15, 2008 my husband and i got this book for our wedding. we both picked out a recipe that we wanted to make, i chose the Marzipan and Orange Essensia Cake, and he chose the raspberries and cream cake. we followed her advice and made the buttercream and moistening syrups ahead of time, which helped out a lot. we also chose to do the first layer of both cakes instead of doing tiered cakes, just to simplify things a little. i recommend following everything she says exactly as shes says it, i chose to do a few things a little differently and paid for it (instead of placing the just baked cakes on racks, i placed them directly onto solid cookie sheets, which made them bottoms a little gooey and they stuck to the sheet), but even with that mistake, they both came out wonderfully, everyone at the wedding was amazed that i had made my own wedding cakes and though they turned out wonderfully! it was fun going around and asking everyone which they liked best too! it turned out i liked the one i picked best and my husband liked the one he picked out best too:) the pictures in this book are just lovely and although we decided to decorate our cakes our own way, she gives really great ideas about decorating too. you really can make your own wedding cake with this book!
THE wedding cake book July 27, 2008 I love this book. I bought it because I am planning on making my own wedding cake for my wedding. I started out simple and have moved onto more elaborate cakes and each and everyone has turned out beautifully. She gives decorating tips(though mostly I do my own thing) and storage and transportation advice. This book is spot on and I have become something of a legend among my friends anytime there is a celebration. I am always nominated to bring the cake. This is a great book with a lot of recipes. You can mix and match cakes and frostings and fillings to no end. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a cake connoisseur.
Great Beginner Info July 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I checked this book out from the library when I was first asked by a family member to make their wedding cake. I LOVE THIS BOOK! Especially for me at the time it was extremely helpful.
What it does tell you: ~The basics of baking a cake including tips on pans, mixers and ingredients. ~A basic how to for assembling a stacked cake. ~Basic recipes for cakes (white, yellow, chocolate)and a basic (non powdered sugar) frosting. ~Several flavor combinations that expand on the basic recipes. ~Simple decorating ideas ~Suggestions on schedules for when to make each component of the cake (you don't have to do it all the day before!) ~Charts on serving sizes, pan sizes, pan capacities, amounts of frostings, syrups, fillings needed for each size cake, etc.
What it won't tell you: ~How to use frosting tips to make designs. This isn't a cake decorating book in that sense. Most of the designs while pretty are simple and use very basic frosting techniques. The book does instruct you on how to do the ones shown. ~It isn't really a cookbook so don't expect to have many different types of recipes. She has a few basic ones that are expanded on to make many variations (and she has plenty of suggestions) but if you are looking for a bunch of different types of recipes, this isn't the book you want.
I bought this book because I like having all the flavor ideas in one handy reference and the photos are beautiful. It was extremely helpful to me when I was doing my first cakes but if you are experienced you likely already have the recipes (or similar ones). For an experienced wedding cake maker this book will probably be far too simplistic. For the novice though, it is an excellent resource that gives you the confidence and tools you need to actually pull off a wedding cake. :)
Excellent detail and instructions for complicated techniques June 26, 2008 I have recently been purchasing many cake decorating books and am able to recommend this one whole-heartedly. She goes into such detail to explain very complicated techniques (like italian meringue buttercream) and through her guidance, I have been able to impress my friends and family with fabulous cakes. Even if you're not interested in wedding cakes particularly, this book has been such an invaluable help on my new cake decorating journey.
A good buy May 13, 2008 This book has inspired me to start cake baking and decorating. Its title is quite accurate, it is mostly for the less experienced cake baker. It has recipes galore, decorating ideas you can mix and match and tells you what products you will need to make the perfect cake (be warned, if you have nothing and want it all, it won't come cheap). No fondant recipes so if thats what you want, this isn't the book for you. The decorating ideas are quite basic but this book shows you how to make tasty and beautiful cakes without having to be a professional.
